Upcoming ATC fieldtrip

We are breaking the junior high into two large groups for our tour of the Ogden Weber Technical College on April 24th.  We will be traveling by city bus.

  • First group leaves at 9 and returns at 11:30
  • Second group leaves at 12-2:30

I could use 1-2 more parent(s) volunteer in each group.  Here is the link to sign up so I know who to give detailed information too:

Chaperons Needed

volunteerIn April we are doing TWO fantastic trips. On April 10th we are walking over to the North Ogden Community Gardens and doing Spring Clean Up.  I need two chaperons to join us.

On April 24th, we will be riding the city bus over to the Ogden Weber Applied Technology College for a tour.  We are splitting the school into two trips and need 4 chaperons on each trip.

Below is a WE-JOIN-IN link that is limited.  Sign ups will close when the needed chaperons positions are filled.  It’s quite fun to observe teenagers in their natural habitat so take advantage of this opportunity.

Science Fair Info

Here are some details on the Science Fair this week:

20111221-science-fair

The Elementary Fair – 18th (Wed)

8:15- 8:30 – Students will go to the gym and set up project on assigned spot.  They will need their project and lab book.  All need to be in place at 8:30 but no later than 8:45.

9:00 – approx. 1000 – the 4th Grade Students will be judged and released

10:00 – approx. 11:30 – the 5th Grade Students will be judged and released.

Please note that any student partners will go with the higher grade judging time.

12:00-2:00 – The gym will be open to all Upper, Lower Elementary and Staff to review the projects and vote on Student/Staff Choice.  This is new this year.  If they wish to vote after reviewing all the projects, they will be given a slip for them to write the location and title of their choice and put it into a box on their way out.  Please make sure students understand this is an opportunity for them to vote on a project they thought was well done or inspiring to them (not simply their buddies) and that they must only put one down.

2:00-4:00 – the gym will be open to the public.  Students will need to take their projects home so we can set up for the Jr. High fair the next day.   Jr. High students in need of community service hours are invited to help clean up and set up for their fair.

The Jr. High Fair – 19th (Thur)

8:15- 8:30 – set up in the gym.  Must be in place no later than 8:45.  Please no late arrivals….  Students will need their board, lab book, final report and other related materials.

9:00 to approx. 10:00 – the 7th and 8th grade students will be judged and released.

10:00 – to approx. 11:30  – the 6th grade students will be judged and released.

Any 6th grade student teamed with a 7th or 8th grader will go during the Jr. High judging.  Please note we may need to call back in students for further judging in the event of ties.

12:00 – 2:00 (start time approx.)  – the gym will be open to Upper Elementary and Jr. High Students and staff to review the projects and vote (if they wish) on a Student/Staff Choice Award.   Please note we may need to delay the start time depending on whether judging is still taking place.

4:00 – 6:00 The Jr. High Science Fair Open House open to the public. Students may take home their projects if they are at the Open House when it closes – otherwise – they will need to pick up their projects on Friday morning.

We will be giving out certificates (not ribbons) this year.   1st place awards will go to the top 10%, 2nd place will go to the top 20%, 3rd to the top 30-49% and all others will receive a participant certificate.  We will also have overall fair 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners who will receive a cash award.    Additionally the Student Choice and Staff Choice award winners will receive a gift certificate award.

The top 5-10 projects in the Jr. High fair will be eligible to go on to further competition at the Ritchey Engineering and Science Fair in March.

We are still in need of volunteers to bring refreshments for the volunteers – so please let us know if you know of anyone willing to help out.  If interested, contact Ms. Paula at pdugan@mariamontessoriacademy.org or let any of our other committee members (Mr. Rob, Ms. Fallon, Mr. John, Ms, Kat).

Thanks for your support,

Paula

Science Fair Help Needed

The Science Fair Committee is looking for volunteers to help during our 5th Annual Science Fair (18-19 February).   There are many different volunteer positions available:  elementary judges (some science or engineering background preferred but not mandatory), both elementary and Jr. High event volunteers to help run the judging station, score keepers, awards, snacks, set-up, and clean-up.   The time frames vary according to the volunteer position.  Those who have volunteered in the past have found the Science Fair to be a fun  and rewarding experience.  Volunteers are critical to the success of the fair and we hope you can find some time to join us.

If interested, contact Ms. Paula at pdugan@mariamontessoriacademy.org or let any of our other committee members (Mr. Rob, Ms. Fallon, Mr. John, Ms, Kat).  Thank-you!

Utah Compose Job Shadow Assignment

I found this really fun job shadow video that include some helpful tips:

thanks

All 7th and 8th grade students need to complete the following essay on Utah Compose.  Here are the steps to get started:

Open a browser (aka, get on the internet)

http://utahcompose.com

log in (it’s your SIS student number, with three 000 added in front of the SIS#, for both log in and password, then you can change it)

Go to keyboarding or digital literacy (which ever you currently have)

Press the practice tab and find  ‘Job Shadow Experience’

I have uploaded the job shadow reflection form if you would like to use it as a pre-write.

When you begin your writing you are welcome to copy and paste from your reflection form. You may also copy and paste from a word processing program.  If you want to finish working on it later click “save & quite.” Otherwise, you can submit your work using the “submit” button.

Let me know if you have questions!  egoddard@mariamontessoriacademy.org

Job Shadow Reflection Due by Dec 5th

Jobshadow

All 7th and 8th grade job shadow reflections are due December 5th.  Here are the links for the forms:

Student Reflection Form (the same form for 7th & 8th grades) The reflection form will be used as a pre-write for a Utah Compose writing exercise for all students.

Job Shadowing Presentation Rubric (7th grade only) My CTE Intro students have already recieved their job shadow packet.  This original packet is worth 30 pts.  However, reality dictates that life happens and they will need another copy. However, it will cost them 30 points when they turn in the secondary copy.

Students will also be required to write a thank you letter to their host/hostess. If you would like a copy of the thank you letter format just email me and I will forward that to you.

If, for whatever reason, your student did not job shadow they will need to choose a job or occupation to research. They will still be required to present.  If you have any questions about this wonderful opportunity don’t hesitate to email Ms. Emily any time! egoddard@mariamontessoriacademy.org
