Be Proactive

This week we started our studies about the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  We are exploring what it means to be proactive and how this can help us to be successful.  This is great vocabulary you can start to utilize at home.  We read the book “If You Plant a Seed” and how we can choose to plant seeds of selfishness or seeds of kindness.  We brainstormed what these different “seeds” look and feel like in our classroom environment.  We will be studying all the habits during the coming months and will continue to use the principles and vocabulary throughout the school year.

I am also looking for a few donated items.  If you happen to have an old portable CD player you no longer use, we would love one for the classroom to practice our skip counting songs.  I am also in need of small spray bottles for cleaning tables.

Thank you for sharing your amazing children with us each day.  As always, if you have questions, concerns, or celebrations, please send me an email at my school email bherrera@mariamontessoriacademy.org.

Our First Week

We had a wonderful first week back to school.  The students were reviewing their grace and courtesy lessons, working on team building, making new friends, and learning about the Montessori great lessons.  We have an amazing group and they are already coming together as a community.

A few things to think about as you are helping your child prepare for school each morning: please try and avoid allowing them to come to school with unnecessary items from home.  Stuffed animals, fidget spinners, toy erasers, and such items are a real distraction and management issue.  We are trying to build trusting relationships with your children and that can be easily hindered if we need to take items from students that are not needed inside the classroom.  Also, please think about the items of clothing they are wearing.  Is your child independent in fastening certain clothing?  If your child is wearing shoelaces, have you worked to help them learn to tie?  We do have work inside the classroom that can help support this learning, but ask that you help reinforce this at home.  Another area that is sometimes forgotten is lunch.  We have several students who are sent to school with lunches that require preparation.  Please make certain you give your child a lesson on how the item needs to be opened or prepared, instant macaroni and cheese is a perfect example.  (We try and limit anything that needs to be warmed to only 1 minute).  Please just take an extra thought while purchasing and packing lunches for you children and make certain it contains items that they can navigate.  I would also like to encourage that your child is involved or responsible for packing their own lunches.  Food for thought, “Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed” Maria Montessori.

Normalization

I wanted to remind everyone about our Normalization Period.  This is a critical time for your child to develop their independence within the school and classroom.  Please refrain from entering the building with your child until this normalization time has ended. We have a supportive community which will allow for your child to be successful without your assistance.  Normalization will continue until October 2nd, after this time our classroom will be open for parent involvement.  I know several of you are anxious to start helping within the classroom and we too are excited and welcoming of the help.  Once we welcome October I will be contacting families for volunteer opportunities.  We have had a wonderful first week back and will continue to work on classroom community, grace and courtesy, and team work.  If you have individual concerns, please feel free to contact me via email.

Normalization Period

Please respect the first 6 weeks of school. Please try to avoid being absent during this time, including vacations.  This period of time is essential where the dynamics of the classroom are being formed; the children are learning their environment and curriculum, establishing time management skills as well as establishing themselves intellectually, emotionally and socially. We will be creating a community in our classroom and building teams by playing cooperative games and other activities. We’ll be getting to know the children and doing placement testing.

May 1st-5th

I wanted to let you know, I will be chaperoning the Redwoods field trip next week.  Ms. Chelsea and Ms. Dixie will be taking over the classroom in my absence.   I will not be able to return emails since access to service is very limited.  I wanted to remind everyone of a few things for this week:

Third graders have their Math SAGE test on Thursday morning.

Parts of a plant celebration will be on Wednesday.  We still need a few more items.  If you could check the sign up sheet that would be wonderful.

Earth Day Service Project

I want to thank everyone for your support with our field trip Friday, especially our chaperones.  I personally had a wonderful time.  One student told me this was the best field trip ever!  The students had a great time while making a difference in our community.  Also, I apologize for interfering with pizza Friday.  I made arrangements and students who ordered pizza last Friday will be able to have them on Monday.

Earth day home projects are due Monday.  This assignment is only for the level 1 and 2 students.  Level 3 students completed their science fair projects (which were fabulous) in place of the Earth Day project, but if they have not presented on Asia, this is due Friday.

Third Grade Calendar Dates

This Friday, April 14th is our third grade science fair.  Please make certain your child is prepared with their materials and presentation.

We are now entering our end of year testing window.  Our third grade students are scheduled for the following SAGE tests: Wednesday, April 19th, Writing; Thursday, May 4th, Math; Wednesday, May 10th, Language Arts.  The testing will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the students have until noon to complete the test.  I ask that you help get them to bed early the night before and provide a hearty breakfast the morning of the test.  Also, please be mindful to have them to school on time.  The test is a great way to celebrate all their hard work and demonstrate their knowledge and growth.

Third grade end of year party is scheduled for Thursday, May 18th.  This will take place in the afternoon.  Details and volunteer opportunities will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Third grade bridging ceremony will be Wednesday, May 24th at 10:30 a.m.  This is their graduation ceremony from lower to upper elementary.

Third grade students will be shadowing in the upper elementary classrooms in the coming weeks.  This is a wonderful experience for students to see what upper elementary is like.  Please note, the classroom they shadow in is our upper elementary mentor class and not  their placement for the next year.

Parent Teacher Conference

The Parent Teacher Conference sign up sheet can be found here.  In order to be mindful of others, if you feel that you may need more than 20 minutes for our conference, please feel free to sign up for an additional time slot.  Please also be aware, Ms. Chelsea will not be attending conferences on Friday, February 17th.  If you are wishing to visit with us both, please select a time on either Wednesday or Thursday.  Students are invited to attend.  Please note, I may wish to visit without you child present for a portion of our conference.  I look forward to visiting with each of you and celebrating your amazing children.  If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.

School will be released at 1:00 p.m. on February 15th, 16th, and 17th.  There will be no school on Monday, February 20th.

Playing Cards

Tomorrow I will be giving each student a deck of cards.  My hope is that these cards will be used, as a fun way, to practice their math fluency.  The students have practiced a few different games within the classroom and I will continue to teach them more as we continue throughout the year.  Building math fluency is an important skill and this is a fun, easy way to help support their learning.  Here are 3 different links that you can use for additional game ideas.  It is great to get friends and siblings involved in the game.  Sometimes, if another player is a little stronger, we have that player count to a certain number before they answer.  Practice different operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, you can even do some games with simple division.  A simple game to start with is for 2 players to divide the deck and each place a card face up and see who can answer the sum first.  If you have questions or concerns, please let me know.

Reminder to everyone to read over the break.  Middle of the year assessments start the day we return from break.  Thank you to those of you who have returned your Roaring Reader folders.  I included extra passages for over the break.  If you forgot your folders bring them tomorrow or let me know if you need passages sent.  I can place them in a zip lock bag.
