International Festival!

International Festival is coming soon!  I would like all projects, for the festival, in class by the 15th, that is in two weeks!   I have asked your student to talk with you tonight about confirming their project idea.  Please have your child prepared with their final project idea by tomorrow.  Remember, they can choose anything related to South America (country, animals, food, monuments, etc.)  If I do happen to have too many students who pick the same topic, we will need to have a back up idea, I will only allow 2 for each topic.  This rarely happens, but it is possible.  We want our classroom to present a variety from South America.  These projects are required for all students and they will need a tri-fold board to display for the festival.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

Reminder

Tomorrow, November 20th, is our Gratitude book feast.  Students may bring books from home, small pillow and blanket (needs to fit inside their locker), and a healthy snack to share.  Also, if your child has not turned in their permission slip to attend the field trip, please sent those tomorrow.

Book Feast

This month students have been working hard on creating thankful journals.  Students reflect on things they are thankful for and record their thoughts into their journal.  On Friday afternoon, we will be having a book feast.  This is a time where we celebrate how thankful we are for books!  Students are encouraged to bring books from home. I do suggest finding a way to label your books, just in case someone has the exact same book.  The students will choose one book they are thankful for and share it briefly with the class.  This is like an informal book report.  The idea is to get other students excited about the book.  Students will be able to spend time reading books.  Students may bring a small pillow and blanket,  it will need to be able to fit inside their locker.  They may also bring a healthy snack to share.  Please be mindful of items that may create a large mess, such as popcorn.  If you have questions, please feel free to email me.

International Festival

PLEASE READ

My favorite school event is happening in just under 5 weeks.  The international festival!  Our classroom is presenting on South America.  On Friday, students had the opportunity to explore ideas they may be interested in further investigating.   Your child may complete a project on anything relating to South America.  They can choose a particular country, animal or animals, food, culture, land marks, etc.  The sky is the limit.  Lower Elementary will be presenting on Thursday, December 17th.  Every student will need to have a completed tri-fold presentation board completed by the 15th.   (This is the only home project that this board is required). The day of the festival, students are welcome to bring artifacts, food samples, etc. Mark your calendars.  Families are encouraged to come and visit all the lower elementary classrooms from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Thursday.  Upper elementary will be presenting on Wednesday the 16th from 9:00-11:00 a.m.  You are welcome to come and visit during those times.  If you do choose to come, you are encouraged to visit other classrooms with your child.  If you have questions, please send me an email.

Nutcracker Field Trip

Hi Parents,

Today, your child should have brought home a red permission slip to attend the Nutcracker on Monday, December 7th.  Please fill them out and return them right away.  I will only be able to take one chaperon on the field trip due to limited seating.  If you are interested and available, please email me right away.  I will have you help with a small group of about 9 students.  We will be taking a bus from the school.  If possible, we are asking for a donation of $3.00 to help pay for the bus.  Here is a link you can use to make a donation or you can send a check to the front office.  If for some reason your child will not be here that day, will you please let me know.

Thanks, Ms. Brittany

MyOn Info

Hi Families,

It was brought to my attention that if you start your child immediately on the MyOn app, before visiting the sight on the desk top, it will skip assessing your child.  It is important to make certain they complete the assessment in order to accurately level your child’s reading level.  The assessment is adaptive, so it is difficult to give you a clear idea of how long the assessment takes, but on average I am hearing it takes about 20 minutes. Thanks again for your support with this great resource.

Chili Cook-off

Dear MMA Families,
Fall is in the air, can you smell it?  Come to the school to enjoy some chili and vote for your favorite at our annual chili cook-off on Thursday November 12, 2015 from 6:00 – 7:30 PM.

If you have a great chili recipe, please join in on the fun and participate as a contestant.  There will be a fabulous prize for the chili with the most votes.  Please use this wejoinin link – http://www.wejoinin.com/sheets/vtlns to sign up to bring chili or volunteer to help out at the event.

What is your favorite chili? Come find out next week

Excited to see you,

Phone books and leaves

Level 2 students are studying leaves this year in botany.  If you happen to have a phone book you would like to donate to the classroom for leaf pressing, please send it with your child.  Level 2 students have been asked to gather leaves.  We already have a small collection, but would love more.  This work is really open to any level student, but the primary focus is for level 2.

Volunteers

Just a reminder that we could really use some volunteers to come and help with the class during the week.  Here is the link.  If you can only come every other week, please sign up and make a note of that.  We will take any help.  Those of you who did sign up, we would love to see you this week.  Thank you so much for your willingness.

During conferences we spoke about a new reading program we have the opportunity to use.  This is a fantastic program and I would like to use this in the classroom with your children.  In order for me to be able to do this, I need your help.  Please, make certain you help your child complete their initial log in and assessment.  Remember, this assessment needs to be what they can read, please don’t answer the questions for them.  I cannot offer class time to help all the students complete this initial log in.  My expectation is that students are using this regularly at home, especially if your child is receiving a reading intervention with one of our reading specialists.  It is so important to remember that your child’s education is a team effort between all of us.  The students who are already using it seem to really enjoy it.  Reading is so important.  This is another great resource that once your child is log in and set up, they can use the program independently.  Please make it a priority to have this initial set up completed asap.  Thank you.
