Parent Reading Volunteers

Hi,

We need your help with reading and such this year in our classroom.  I have create a link here for you to sign up and help.  Multiple volunteers can sign up in one time slot. ( I have enough need to keep you busy). This help is primarily working with students.  We greatly appreciate your time.  Remember all families are asked to donate 40 hours of volunteer time each year.  You are welcome to sign up for both hours back to back.  We are flexible if these exact times do not work for you.  Please just make a note next your sign up or send me an email.  I know a few of you mentioned your willingness to help during conference and I already had one wonderful mother start last week.  If you would please go ahead and sign up on this link, I would greatly appreciate having one document for all volunteers who come during our morning work cycle.  Thank you for your willingness to help.

Red Ribbon Week

Hi families,

This week is our annual red ribbon week.  Our theme this year is: Respect yourself, be drug free!   Today students received their drug free wrist band, we would like for them to wear their bands all week long.  On Friday, we would like for students to wear red, (remember no costumes) for spirit day.  Students in lower el may enter a drawing contest based on this years theme.  I would encourage you as families to talk with your child about this years theme and brainstorm possible ideas for their own drawings.  We will have a small amount of class time to work on these, so students are welcome to work at home and bring them to class.  They are due Wednesday.  We had a wonderful guest speaker Dorain Willes come and speak about his experiences and how to remain drug free.  The students have also been working hard on their classroom door contest.  Thanks for your support in making this week a great one.

Original Works Fundraiser Information

What is Original Works? For 26 years, this company has been coordinating with schools to turn children’s art into keepsakes. You can choose from one or more of the following: key chains, magnets, mirrors, coasters, notebooks, tiles, mugs, tote bags, water bottles, cell phone covers, night lights, T-shirts, quilt block, mouse pads, note cards, pillowcases, journals, pot holders, matted prints, and decorative flags.

Who benefits from this fundraiser? When you order, the profit goes directly to your child’s classroom!

What should I do if my child completed more than one piece of art? Each piece of art needs its own order form. If you want to order multiple pieces of art, please get additional order forms from Rachael Bush.

What should my child do with their completed packets? Return the art, order form, and check payable to MMA to the school. There will be a table at the entrance ready for your orders.  PLEASE do NOT give money and order forms to teachers.

We ONLY accept checks! Please make them out to MMA and include them with your completed order form.

When are order forms due? By October 26th. Look for the Original Works table in the school’s entrance!

When will orders arrive? Original Works art keepsake(s) will be sent home on December 2nd.

What if my child didn’t finish their art at school? Your child can complete, add to, or even replace their art at home. Use 8½ x 11″ plain paper and color or paint. Please no glitter, pipe cleaners, googley eyes, or anything else that makes the art 3-D.

What if parents don’t want to order? You keep your child’s art!

If you have additional questions, please contact rachael.bush@gmail.com

Thank You

Thank you for a wonderful round of conferences this past week.  I truly enjoy the opportunity to celebrate these wonderful children with all of you.

Please remember to log into your MyOn reading accounts.  We have noticed several of you have already taken the opportunity to get started.  Thank you!  I would like for everyone to please log in and start using the program by the end of the week.

Thank you all the wonderful book donations from the book fair.  The class has already begun to enjoy these wonderful treasures.

I also wanted to thank you for signing up to help at the Fall Festival.  We cannot make these events happen with you!  Remember it is this Friday from 4-7 p.m.

Original works came home today.  Thanks for your consideration in ordering from this great fundraiser.  The funds earned return directly into our classroom, room 2!  How fantastic is that!  I have extra order forms if needed.  Remember, you do not need to use the artwork they brought home, you could use anything they have created that fits within the guidelines.  Orders will be delivered December 2nd in time for winter holidays.

We are in need of 12 volunteers, between Miss Brittany’s class and Miss Krista’s class, to help run the Photo Booth and Face Painting. The volunteer slots are for one hour increments. We need 2 volunteers at the Photo Booth per hour and 2 volunteers at Face Painting per hour. Please, click here http://www.wejoinin.com/sheets/bpjct to sign up for a one hour slot. Remember this goes towards your 40 hours of volunteer time the school requires. Thanks again for your help!

Home Projects

As I mentioned before, we are focusing our home projects around our Zoology studies this month.  Students have already begun bringing their projects and are always excited to share the information they have learned with their peers.  Home projects are a great transition into helping your child gather information from what they read.  Please help your child to read and gather information from books, articles, and the internet.  Make certain they are using words they know how to read and understand in their final written work and are not just copying information.  If your child is not yet fully reading, please read with them and have them dictate to you what they want to write.  Then have them trace over your writing for good practice.  Then, they may orally practice and present without notes.  This is much more interesting and makes their project their own.  Often times student will copy something from the internet and have a friend read it for them.  This defeats what a home project is meant to be.  Home projects need to have some sort of visual aid and a written paper equal to your child’s ability level.  Level 3’s will be encouraged to start typing their reports.  They will be expected to type on the SAGE test this year and this is good practice.

LEVEL 1’s -Please help your child find a vertebrate they are interested in.  Level 1’s are studying vertebrates all year long.  They have begun identifying the different classes of vertebrates.

LEVEL 2’s- Anything to do with the human body.  This can include nutrition, exercise, skeleton, brain, etc.  Make it fun!

LEVEL 3’s- Any invertebrate of their choice.

This home project is due by the end of the month.  Please make this a quality learning experience with your child.  We want this to be their work, but they will need some guidance.  It isn’t a project you complete in one night, it should be a process, and an enjoyable one.

I have posted the all of the home projects for the year on the blog under pages or you can access it here.  If you have questions about home projects, please feel free to ask me during conferences.

Fall Festival

Fall festival fliers were sent home on Friday.  For those of you new to the school, this is the annual fundraising festival where students can celebrate and wear their costumes. (Students will not wear costumes during school hours).  Discounted wrist bands and tickets will be sold this week during parent teacher conferences.  The festival is Friday October 23rd, from 4-7 p.m.  We look forward to seeing everyone at this fun event.
