Permission Slip

Permission slips for our April field trip were sent home today.  Please keep the top copy and send back the consent form.  Ideally, I would like these back before our upcoming break, regretfully, I forgot to send them home on Wednesday.  If you are available to chaperone, please let me know.  Thanks so much!

Third graders, please bring science fair materials to work on tomorrow!

Additional Information for Third Grade Science Fair

Hello Parents!

As part of your child’s Friday studio program, your child attends a science class!  To demonstrate an understanding of content from this year your child has been asked to choose one topic we have covered for their end of the year science project.  Students have learned: simple machine, 3 states of matter, light and heat from the Sun, heat (friction), sound, electricity and static electricity, the relationships between the Sun, Earth, and Moon, how living and non-living things interact in an environment, force- 3 laws of motion, and momentum.  By choosing a topic, students’ objective is to become the teacher in one of these areas from science for others.  Your child will need to be able to explain their topic of choice with a creative visual that helps teach others what they want to be the expert on.  Please do not see this project as a science fair!  Students may choose any means necessary for their visual presentation.  Some ideas include, but are not limited to:

  • Poster or tri-fold board
  • Brochure
  • Hands on experiment
  • Experiment demonstration by student (must be able to show over and over)
  • Board game
  • Video (Example: Make their own Bill Nye)
  • Performance or skit
  • Diorama
  • Create a book
  • Create a lesson or work

Projects are due April 14th, a Friday.  From 1:00pm-2:30pm, students from other grades and parents will get to tour and learn from our student teachers!  Set up will be in the gym.  If your child’s project takes up some room or is delicate, projects may arrive by noon on the 14th.

A rubric will be used a tool to help their teacher know if they have sufficient understanding of their content.  The level of understanding your child exhibits will be used to score their science section on the Maria Montessori Academy progress report.

Please email me if you have any further questions- kparsons@mariamontessoriacademy.org

Chaperones needed for upcoming field trips.

I wanted to let you know about a tentative field trip for Friday, April 21st.  This is an early out day at 1:00 p.m.  Our plan is for student to be dropped off at Ogden Botanical Gardens at 9:00 a.m. and pick up will take place at 12:30 p.m.  We will be doing botany, Earth Day, and service projects this day.  Once the field trip is formally approved, permission slips will be sent home.  I am looking for volunteers.  If you are interested, please send me an email asap.  If need, we may have our room mother help coordinate rides to and from the garden.  Otherwise, you will be responsible for providing a ride for your child.  Please put this date on your calendar.

Wednesday, May 17th, is our field trip to the zoo.  Permission slips were signed earlier in the year.  I am looking for certified drivers who are willing to drive and chaperone for the day.  I am wanting to start solidifying our carpool arrangements as soon as possible.  If you are available to attend, even if you previously confirmed with me, will you please let me know.  When you email me, please let me know how many seats you have available, excluding your own child.   Also, if you are not a certified driver, but interested in attending and possibly carpooling (arranged through our room mother) pleases send me an email. Thanks so much, we couldn’t do with it without you

Reminder

We are entering the last week of March, level 1 and 2 students need to have their Asia projects completed by Friday.  Level 3 students have until the end of April.  Level 3 students should be working on their science fair projects and their Asia projects.  They are due to end of April.

Thank you!

I wanted to thank everyone for our field trip yesterday.  I know that it is a change of routine for everyone to get their children to and from the Frontrunner Station.  I appreciate your support.  I deeply appreciate all the chaperones who attended, we couldn’t have done it without you!  It was a beautiful day and nice to be outside of the classroom.  The children enjoyed riding the train and exploring the museum.  Our small machines workshop was not exactly what we anticipated, so today, we spent some additional time exploring and using various small machines.  They even drew plans on how simple machines could help them catch a leprechaun.  Thank you again!

Thursday!

Don’t forget, Thursday is our field trip to Discovery Gateway!  The weather looks like it will be beautiful.  Please make certain your child has a sack lunch and good walking shoes.  If your child will not be attending, please send me an email.  Please be mindful of the arrival times listed below.

  • Students begin drop off at Ogden Frontrunner station (2350 S Wall Ave) at 8:10 a.m. Don’t be late!
  • Students leave Ogden Frontrunner station at 8:37 a.m.
  • Arrive at Ogden Frontrunner station at 2:52 p.m. for pick up.  Please pick up children, from the Frontrunner station, before getting other students from the school.

If you have questions or concerns, please let me know.

Chaperones for Thursday

I want to thank the overwhelming response of volunteers who are wanting to participate in our field trip this Thursday.  Our group has grown quickly and I have emailed the museum to make certain it will not be an issue.  Please know, I do not have enough Frontrunner passes for all of our chaperones and you will need to pay for your ride on the Frontrunner.  Chaperones are free at the museum.  I had a few of you ask about younger siblings.  They do charge for their attendance.  I am also waiting to make certain that our larger than anticipated group is not an issue.

Chaperones will play an important role in supervising and engaging the students.  If you are uncomfortable with this responsibility, please let me know.  I will plan on pairing each chaperone with their own child and at least one other peer.  I will also provide each chaperone an expectation handout provided by the museum along with an agenda.  I look forward to our time together on Thursday and appreciate your willingness to participate.

3rd grade parents

3rd grade students will be participating in a mini science fair on Friday, April 14th.  This fair is being held in the afternoon from 1:00-2:15 p.m.  This fair is related to their studio science class.  Ms. Kaley is organizing the event and has asked for all 3rd grade students to commit to a topic and bring research materials to class on Friday, March 24th and 31st.  The final project is due April 14th.  Below is the topic your child chose to present.  3rd grade students will be excused from April’s home project in order to prepare for their science fair.  I have also given them an extension on their Asia project for this month.  They may present their Asia project anytime between now and the end of April.  If you have questions, please let me know.
