Parent Education Night

I wanted to remind you of our parent education night this Thursday the 27th at 7:00 p.m.  The subject is about school safety for our generation.  This should be very informative.  We as school will be implementing additonal safety changes in the coming weeks.  It is very sobering to see the changes needed in our schools in order to keep our children safe.  Years ago, I would never have thought I would be practicing lock down drills with my students.  We have had the honor of having Robbie and Allissa Parker serving on our school safety committee this year.  They will be the guest speakers on Thursday night.  If you are unfamiliar, the Parker’s lost their daughter Emilie in the Sandy Hook shooting in December of 2012.  We will also have representatives from the local Fire and Police department present.  This is open to all of our community, please feel free to invite neighbors and friends.

Thank you for all your “Love”

I want to thank you for all your help to make our Valentines celebration special.  I appreciate your donations and especially want to thank all of you who came to help.  I most importantly want to thank our room mother for organizing it all.  I am certain the kids had a great time and the snacks were a hit!

I wanted to remind you if you wanted to come visit your student during work cycle, sign up is on the blog.  I also wanted to ask for help with snack for dates in March.  We are also in need of a few things.  If you happen to have a cutting board you would be willing to part with we could use a new one that would be easy for the kids to wash and maintain.  We are also in need of sponges for washing dishes, if you are willing to donate to the cause.  We are also down to two rolls of paper towels.  These come in handy when we are out of the school supplied paper towels and waiting for them to be refilled.  Thanks for your consideration in helping us with these items.

Science fair is this Wednesday.  Upper el will be presenting and an open house will be held after school for the community to come visit.

Remember to be working on home projects and reading your 20 minutes daily.  We started our reading heart chain around the room this past week.

I hope you are enjoying your long weekend and I look forward to seeing your children’s bright faces in the morning.  I miss them!

Week of February 10th

It was nice meeting with you over Parent Teacher Conference.  I enjoy your children so much and it is nice to sit with you and celebrate the individuals they are and the growth they are making.

I know I mentioned the importance of reading at home at least 20 minutes daily.  We will be starting our heart chain this week, for every 10 minutes they read at home they can add a heart to our classroom chain.  We will measure how long it takes us to complete it one time around the classroom.  Remember the sight word link is available on the blog.  This is a great way to build fluency which many of us spoke about during conferences.

The International Festival was great fun.  I am certain the students shared their excitement about many of the things they saw and experienced.  We need to start working on our next home project.  This is especially important for our level 3’s.  Upper El is just around the corner and it is now we need to start preparing.  Level 3’s will be required to bring in a completed typed page to accompany all presentations.  The SAGE test requires that all essays are to be typed.  This is the time to prepare.  If your level 3 is having a hard time finding a subject of interest, we are currently focusing our cultural studies on Asia, dinosaurs, flowers, weather and invertebrates.  These are all wonderful areas to explore further outside of the classroom.

Level 1’s and 2’s are required to continue bringing in home projects.  I still want this to be your child’s work.  Please gage this according to your child and their reading level.  Remember that our goal is to make learning enjoyable and interesting to your student.  I would like to see our advance level 1 and our level 2’s bringing in a hand written paper to accompany their presentations.  For our more beginning readers, please read information with your child and have them dictate to you what they would like to say.  Then have them copy their dictations into their own handwriting on a separate paper.  All projects are presented to their classmates.  The next project is due the end of this month.

We will be exchanging valentines this Friday.  We have 23  students in our classroom.  Please remember if you choose to bring candy with your cards they need to be in sealed envelopes.

Come To School With Your Child

I have provided a we join in link for you to sign up to visit your child during our morning work cycle.  Two parents may sign up for one time slot.  You will be asked to read and sign guidelines at the front office before your visit.  You will be coming in during our morning work cycle.  Please feel free to quietly come in and join your child.  In order to assist the students during this time, please be mindful that myself and Ms. Brec will not be available to visit with you.  You will be asked to fill a brief survey at the office when your visit is over. Please feel free to contact me via email if you have anything you would like to follow up with.  We hope that you take advantage of this fun opportunity.

We had fun celebrating Chinese New Year.  The children enjoyed making paper laterns, envelopes, trying traditional foods, and experiencing treasures Ms. Brec brought back from China.

Our International Festival is this week.  Please come see the students projects on Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.  Important reminder that projects are due Monday.  The children have already begun to present to each other and have a great idea of what to expect.
