Snack

Our cupboard is completely bare and we are asking for help with snack sign ups.  Our hope is that every family will donate at least one week worth of snack during the school year.  If you are able to provide 2 weeks, this helps even more. Snack sign up can be found on our school track it forward web site here.  Our class sign ups can be found on the Monday of each week.  If the box is blue, this means we still need snack for that week.  Thanks so much for your support.

Parent Education Night

Parent Education Night

Mark your calendars for an exciting, educational evening, Thursday, December 6th 5:30-6: 30 p.m. Our teachers have heard you and understand that you would like more knowledge about what Montessori looks, sounds, and feels like, how it can benefit you and your child, and a better connection to some of its vocabulary. We will host a night with two prime topics being featured: Grace and Courtesy (Communication, Independence, Movement, and Self-Discipline) and The Benefits of Montessori (how it differs from traditional schooling). After a short introduction together in the small gym, we will break out into groups to discuss the two topics. We look forward to seeing you all there! Any questions can be directed to sellis@mariamontessoriacademy.org or jhall@mariamontessoriacademy.org.

Next Home Project

Hi, I wanted to let you know that we will be starting our next study when we return from the break on the theme of STRUCTURE.  We have made some small changes to the project expectation which will be due Friday, January 18th.  The changes are as follows:

Level 1: Will research and present on a scientist

Level 2: Will do a project using the scientific method

Level 3: Will present on either simple machines or forces of motion

I will include the original write up below.  The students will be presenting school wide after STEM week starting January 22nd.

Please note, they will likely not be ready to explore their ideas until the foundation lessons have been presented.  I would suggest opening the conversations once we enter the month of December.

Structure November 26th-January 11th

Stem Fair January 14th

The theme STRUCTURE is what your child will be studying during our third thematic unit.  To relate the theme STRUCTURE to our STEM Festival the week of January 14th, STRUCTURE can mean certain processes scientists use or explore such as the scientific method, the physical structure of matter or the structure of the universe, the structure of the classification of living things and so much more. There’s a lot to explore!

For the STEM Fair home project, we will ask that your child create a science presentation based on Utah state science standards they’ve been studying in class.  We want to treat our STEM Fair not as a general “Science Fair,” but rather a celebration of science.

A science celebration presentation is not limited to just a tri-board.  Listed below are ideas your child can choose from (but are not limited to) for the STEM Fair.

Some ideas include, but are not limited to:

  • Poster or tri-fold board
  • Brochure
  • Hands-on experiment with write-up
  • Experiment demonstration by student (must be able to show over and over)
  • Create a board game
  • Video (Example: Make their own Bill Nye)
  • Performance or skit
  • Diorama
  • Create a book
  • Create a lesson or work

Below is a list of state standards that your student should be familiar with by the second half of the year when we hold our STEM fair:

1st grade- Scientific Method on Earth/Space sciences, Life sciences, or Force and Motion

2nd grade- Scientific Method on Earth/Space sciences, Life sciences, or Force and Motion

3rd grade- Sun, Earth, Moon relationship, Living and Non-living within an Environment, Forces and Motion, Gravity, Heat and Light

Thank You

It was wonderful to visit with everyone during our conferences.  It is a pleasure to work with your wonderful children and I always look forward to celebrating their growth with you. I also wanted to thank you for the amazing book donations from the book fair, we received several beautiful books to use within the classroom.  Thank you!  I hope everyone has a nice fall break and I will see you on Monday.

Message From MAPA

Good afternoon,

This is a message from Angela, our MAPA president, to please put on your blogs:
Hi Parents,

Thank you so much to everyone who has already signed up to help at Fall Festival! October is a pretty busy month as far as MAPA and volunteering go so we need help from so many. If you haven’t had a chance to sign up yet there is still time. We need several more volunteers to keep all of the activities open. This year MAPA will be implementing the “no volunteer, no activity” moto again. This means that any time we have a volunteer need and no one has signed up that activity will be closed for the time slot.

Not only do we have Fall Festival this month we also have Parent Teacher Conference dinners and Book Fair October 15-17th.

Please, please follow the link and sign up where you are able. Please note there are multiple signups for all events on the calendar. If one is full please click on the next signup sheet. If you have any questions you can email MAPA at mapa@mariamontessoriacademy.org.

Fall Festival

Reminder that Friday, October 12th, is our annual Fall Festival.  This is the students chance to wear their costumes (we don’t wear them on Halloween to school) with their friends.  Your child should have brought home a flier with the details.  The event beginnings 4 p.m. and finishes at 7 p.m.  We hope to see you there!

Reading Volunteers

We are officially ending our normalization period and would like to ask for volunteers to come and read with our students.  The only day that we would not be able to fully utilize volunteers is on Tuesdays, since we have our specials that day.  I prefer morning help, but will not decline afternoon help.  If you are interested and available, please send me an email with the days and times you wish to come.  Thank you for your willingness to help our classroom community.

Important: Friday Field Trip

Browning Center Event Parking

Please click the above link to see a parking map provided for our field trip Friday.  The building we will be visiting is labeled BC.  The hourly parking lot is marked with a red “X”.  All of the lower elementary classrooms will be attending this day and I anticipate it being a little challenging to find our entire class together.  My hope is to gather our class safely near the “U” shaped road, toward the south side, near the Browning Center entrance.  I ask for everyone’s patience as we work together.

When you come to the school to pick up your children to drive to the field trip, please meet in the North Shore parking lot.  I will walk our class over near the fence.  Please walk over to pick up your child and any other students you will be providing a ride.  They need to check out with me before they walk over to your car.

Please arrive on time to pick up your child.  We plan to leave at 11:45 a.m.  I will have the students over there closer to 11:40 a.m. I need to stay at the school until everyone has left.  Then, once you arrive at WSU, please stay with your child until I arrive to gather the children, please do not leave them unattended.

We will gather at the same place for pick-up after the show.  You must check out with me before you take your child.
