Thank you to everyone who helped make our field trip amazing. I was so much fun and a great introduction to our study on Asia.

Busy Month
I have a few important key reminders regarding the next couple of weeks. In the past, I have invited parents during the month of December for a holiday class program. As many of you may have remembered, we did the fun readers theaters last year. Since we have the school Winter Choir Concert on Thursday, December 8th, Treehouse Museum field trip on December 13th (permission slips are coming home Monday), and the International Festival on December 19th and 20th (our class presents the 20th, starting at 12:30 p.m.), we have decided to have a class program at a later date.
Please remember that International Festival home projects are due the 15th. We have already had several students present and their hard work is amazing! Thank you for supporting your children with this important event.
During the next several weeks our cultural focus will be on the area of history. Level 1 students are learning to tell time. Level 2 students are studying our Solar System and creating a booklet. Level 3 students are creating a booklet of research based on the time line of life. They are really enjoying seeing the evidence of living things that no longer exist on our planet.
Your continued support with reading at home is greatly encouraged. Don’t forgot to use Myon at home, especially for home project research. Also, although students do not have formal assignments on IXL for homework, I strongly encourage the use, especially over our long breaks.
As always, if you have questions, concerns, or celebrations, please send me an email at my school email bherrera@mariamontessoriacademy.org
Treehouse Museum Field Trip
I am preparing for our field trip to the Treehouse Museum on Tuesday, December 13th. This will be an afternoon field trip and I will be sending details, along with permission slips after the break. I am in need of chaperones. We will arrive at the museum at 12:45 p.m. and leave at 2:45 p.m. Please note that younger siblings are not permitted during field trips, this is a policy of the Treehouse Museum. If you are interested, please send me an email.
Beautiful Day
Thank you to everyone for making our wonderful field trip amazing. It was a beautiful fall day on the farm. I appreciate our chaperones, certified drivers, and all of the parent support. If you have pictures from our field trip that you would like submitted for possible entry into the yearbook, please forward them to me.
Black Island Farms Field Trip
PLEASE READ
Our field trip to Black Island Farms (3178 S 3000 W, Syracuse) is this Tuesday morning. Students must be at the farm no later than 8:45 a.m. Our hayride will begin at exactly 9:00 a.m. and they will not be able to wait for late arrivals. If you are riding with a carpool, please meet them at North Shore Parking lot, no later than 8:10 a.m. The drive from the school to the farm is approximately 30 minutes. Do not sent students into the classroom, I will not be there to greet them.
If you are an additional parent wanting to attend, please know that the cost is $4.00 and there is no guarantee of room on the hayride. Teachers, certified drivers, and my 2 confirmed chaperones, will for certain be attending the hayride with the students. They do charge for anyone that walks. If there is not room, you will be welcome to attend all other aspects of the field trip.
Please dress for the weather. I am seeing a possibility of rain. If the weather is uncertain come Tuesday morning, I will try and contact the farm and send out an email.
Bring a sack lunch and water bottle.
We will plan on leaving the farm about 12:45 p.m. and return back to the school about 1:15 p.m.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to send me an email.
Certified Drivers for Black Island Farms
We are fortunate to have certified drivers for our upcoming field trip. I have created a wejoin here for you to sign up. If you still need a ride for your child and all the slots are full, our room mother might be able to coordinate rides for you.
Field Trip Permission Forms
Students brought home permission slips today. Please read them over and send them back right away. I do have a certified driver who can drive 5 students and I can help arrange rides for those children, so please send me an email. If you are a certified driver for the school and would be available, please let me know asap. If your child needs a ride beyond our certified driver, our classroom room mother may be able to help arrange those, otherwise you will need to make your own arrangements. If you want to know other upcoming field trip dates, please see our blog page. They are listed under the year at a glance.
Thank you for your continued support with our new Roaring Readers club. I did send a few home in ziplock bags, if your child did not return their folder. These are due back on Friday.
A great week
Last week was a wonderful week. Our highlight was our visit from local author, Gary Hogg. We have been reading one of his book in our classroom and were really excited to have him come and visit our classroom and help us improve our writing. Third grade students were also invited to an additional workshop with him. My favorite moment was inviting one of our second grade students, who has a strong love of writing, to the additional workshop. Our cultural lessons were focused on history. Level 1 students focus on the concept of time and have been reviewing days of the week, months of the year, and completing a monthly calendar. Level 2 students focused on the birth of our universe and the different states of matter. Level 3 have started their focus on the time line of life. They worked together to build the large time line and focused on how old the earth was before life began. I have been busy completing math and reading assessment. This has been an added obstacle to our regular work cycle and a key part of our normalization. I am pleased to announce they are now complete and we are working hard toward a full regular work routine. The reading team is still working to complete our dibles testing and we are gearing up to send home reading assignments for students who are reading at or below a first grade reading level, so please be on the look out for these assignments. These reading assignments will be in addition to our monthly home projects. Reminder that these are due and should be brought in as soon as they are completed.
Reminder that you can visit our classroom page at anytime to see our monthly projects and view our dates for field trips, etc. We will be adding a few more dates as students complete their ideas for service learning opportunities and such, but this does offer a good idea of what is coming. I also wanted to extend an invitation to any families or friends who have lived or visited countries in Europe. We will be studying Europe between now and winter break and I would love to invite guests into the classroom who have personal experience.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or celebrations, please send me and email.
One last thing, if you have magazines that are classroom appropriate that we could use for some cutting work, would you please send them in. We will be using them for finding letters. Thank you.
Field Trip
Monday I will be sending home bright orange permission slips for our upcoming field trip to the library. The students will be walking to the library the afternoon of May 11th. Please return these forms back as soon as possible. If you would like to come along, please let us know. We would love the extra company. Students will be learning more about our library and the upcoming summer reading programs.
Field Trip Thursday
Thursday is our field trip to Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St. Ogden. Unfortunately, we do not have certified drivers who have volunteered to drive for this field trip, so all rides will need to be arranged on your own. For liability reasons, I cannot arrange rides with non-certified drivers, you will need to arrange your own rides. I understand how this can be challenging for some, but feel free to ask classroom friends, if a ride is needed. We will meet at North Shore about 11:50 a.m. Students will eat lunch at school before we leave the school. Students will be dropped off in the parking lot of Ogden Nature Center about 12:15 p.m. We will walk in together, in order to start our program at 12:30 p.m. Students need to be picked up from Ogden Nature Center at 2:30 p.m. If you plan to take your own child directly after the field trip, it is not necessary to meet me back at the school, but please tell your child to bring their lunch box and backpack when they leave the school at 11:50 p.m. and make certain it is communicated back to me that they are leaving with you for the day. Remaining students will meet back in front of the school and we will enter the school together as a group. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.
Important: parents are invited and encouraged to attend, but no siblings may attend, even infants. This is a strict policy of Ogden Nature Center. There is a $3 fee to attend, this will be paid at Ogden Nature Center.
