Greetings!

Big picture

The Chili Cook Off is upon us – it is scheduled for Tuesday, January 29. We are looking for6th grade volunteers to help set up and take down. Please sign up here

Our class will be entering in a pot of chili this year, but we need donations.  Please sign up to bring something in here. I am asking that all donations are brought in Tuesday morning so we can cook.  We don’t have room to store it for longer than that.    I would also love parent volunteers to come in and help us cook Tuesday.  My plan is to start making the chili around 1:00 PM and then put it into crockpots to keep it warm until it is time for the cook off at 5:30 PM.

Thank you in advance!

Spelling lists for the Spelling Bee during Literacy Week in March went home today.  Please work with your child to study those words.  We will be having an in-class Bee in about a month to determine who will be participating in the school wide spelling bee.

Thank you everyone for working so hard on the beautiful STEM projects for last week!  I was floored by the care and dedication my students had for their projects.  We also had some winners at the Science Fair!  Please make sure that students are bringing in the packets they used to work on their projects so I can finish grading them.

I know you are expecting to hear about the next take home project here: but take a breath! The Upper Elementary team as a whole has decided to cancel the next take home project due to time constraints.

We are doing a fundraiser here at school called the Fun Run.  Expect daily emails home about the lessons we are learning about here at school, and make sure to check in with your kids about it.

As always, questions, comments, concerns, shoot me an email.

Greetings! We are heading into STEM week, which means a crazy schedule.  FYI, next weeks schedule.

Tuesday:

  • 5th graders display their inventions for Invention Convention
  • 6th graders at STAR BASE

Wednesday:

  • 6th graders – Science Fair!
  • Come check out projects from 2:30-4

Friday:

  • 4th graders displaying their mousetrap cars
  • 5th graders at JA Biztown

All week your child will be experiencing a variety of assemblies and discussions about the importance of STEM in today’s world, check in with them everyday to hear what amazing things they got to learn!

It was brought to my attention that I didn’t post the due dates for the STEM projects on the last post.  PROJECTS FOR ALL GRADES ARE DUE THE 10th.

4th grade update:

Fourth graders and I sat down today to discuss materials for the Mousetrap cars.  They created a detailed list of what they needed:

  • Balsa wood or Stiff foam for the car body
  • a mousetrap (or two to compensate for mistakes)
  • dowels, straws, pencils, or whatever round stick-like object they would like to use for axles
  • something to use for wheels (CDs, records, etc)
  • A string
  • A way to attach it all together (nails, screws, tape, etc.)

Some good resources to see what we’re doing:

Please let me know if you have any questions.  If you need help buying supplies for this project, let me know and I would be happy to assist.

Welcome Back

Greetings!

I hope you all had restful breaks and were able to spend time with the people you love.  I was able to see both family and friends and get in some turns on all that powder we got this break!  I am so looking forward to seeing your child tomorrow in the classroom, my life has been quiet without their laughter.

Please be aware that we are hitting the ground at a full sprint now that we are back!  Please expect many updates and papers coming home the next few weeks as we pick back up after break.

I don’t want this to get buried in the month-at-a-glance. STEM WEEK IS FAST APPROACHING.  For 6th this means science fair, for 5th, this means invention convention, and for 4th it means the mousetrap car.  6th graders will be checking in with me tomorrow as to progress.  5th graders should be working through their invention convention packet independently, and the 4th graders need to bring in any supplies to make their mousetrap cars (or the completed car if they are choosing to build at home) on Monday the 7th.  We are going to start testing our builds the week of the 7th.  If you need me to help gather supplies for your child’s mousetrap car, invention, or science fair project, or need me to allow class time for the 5th and 6th graders, please let me know no later than the 4th of January.

From the MMM:

Dear Families,

Please take a few moments to complete this anonymous Stakeholder Survey before it closes on December 14th. We need your feedback as change only comes when we know where we can improve.

The survey link is https://goo.gl/forms/crazDfVKIu8ENemv2.

If you would like to be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card, please take a screenshot of the last page of the completed survey and send it to info@mariamontessoriacademy.org.

STARbase Info: (6th only)

Dear Sixth Grade Families,
Our sixth grade students have the unique opportunity to attend STARBASE on Hill Air Force Base.  This is a wonderful STEM program offered to very few schools in Northern Utah.  The permission slip has already been sent home and returned to school by each family, thank you.  This is a five day field trip one day a week for five weeks.  The dates for this wonderful experience are:
STARBASE:
Monday January 7, 2019
Tuesday January 15, 2019
Wednesday January 23, 2019
Wednesday January 30, 2019
Wednesday February 6, 2019
It is your responsibility as parents to get your child to and from STARBASE on each of the dates listed above.  I encourage you to carpool with each other.  I would like permission from each family to send out a list of the sixth grade parents e-mail addresses to each of you so you can coordinate rides.  Please let me know as soon as possible if you do not want me to share your e-mail address with the other sixth grade families.
STARBASE in on Hill Air Force Base; we have a few plans to get your students on base.  Other schools hire a bus to get them to and from STARBASE.  A bus costs $500.00 a day so that is not an option for us.
Our first plan is to meet at The Aerospace Museum and STARBASE will send a Hill Air Force Base bus to come pick us up and transport us to and from STARBASE.  The information for this plan is located here. Roy Gate Base Bus   One last thing, I can not press upon you enough not to be late dropping off or picking up. The use of the base bus is a courtesy that has been extended to STARBASE and we do not want to keep them waiting; especially if they have other routes.
The second plan if the Hill Air Force Base cannot come get up for some reason is to have parents transport their child onto base.  In order for anyone to get onto base they need to provide some information.  Please fill out this form with the appropriate information if you think there is any possibility you might drive to or from this field trip one of the days.  TRANSPORTATION FOR BASE ACCESS ’18  STARBASE needs this information by December 20th.  Please get this information to me as soon as possible.  Once this information is turned over to security forces we will not be able to add any drivers.  If you think there is a small chance you may drive your child then please fill out this form.  These are the instructions for getting to the South Gate.  South Gate Contingency Paln ’18
If you have any questions please let me know.
Ms. Amy

FYI

Both Troy and Molly will be laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial cemetery in Ogden on Wednesday, December 5.
Grave side service will be starting at 3 pm, everyone is welcome to attend.
Their plots are to the north of the angel statue in the main entrance to the cemetery.

Astro Camp

I apologize that this did not go home with your child last week, the information for the field trip is here: Astro Camp – Cover Letter

Info for carpools is coming.

Enjoy your break!

Hello all,

STEM week is January 14-18, which is still two months away, but I want to get everyone thinking about potential projects over the break.

For 6th graders, this means Science Fair

For 5th graders, this means Invention Convention

For 4th graders, this means an in-house STEM project.

6th and 5th grade students will be coming home with a packet of papers today.  This is their workbook to help them get started on their projects.  I have created a new tab up top that is now your go-to-place for all digital copies of forms.

4th graders will be doing a mostly in-class project.  Please anticipate a need to gather supplies for your child, but they will not be working on this project at home.  note: I would love to have a parent volunteer who works in a STEM field come in and work with my fourth graders on this project. Please email me if you would like to come in.

Astrocamp:

Our astrocamp field trip is coming up the Tuesday after break.  We will need parent volunteers to drive and to chaperone- please anticipate an email from our room mom, Alisha. The info sheet will be sent home hard copy with your student today and an electronic copy will be put in our new “important document” tab
