History Home project

I have posted a page at the top of the blog with the home projects by grade for the entire year.  Our first home project will be due the week of October 7.

First graders will create a timeline of their life in book form. They will need a page for each year of their life and will label each page with that particular year. On each page, they will need to attach a photo that was taken during that year. Under each photo, they will need to write a sentence or more about that year in their life. They will need to design a cover for their book.

Second graders will be doing a project on fundamental human needs.  They may research those needs in one of two ways. The first is to research a certain need (communication, transportation, etc) and learn how mankind has met this need through time. For example, if a student is researching transportation, they can report on the advancement from walking to riding animals to creating machines like cars, trains, and planes. The other method of research is to pick a civilization and time period, for example, Ancient Egypt. The student would then research how this group of
people met four of the fundamental human needs.

Third graders will choose a dinosaur or other prehistoric animal to research and present. They need to explain what time period the animal lived, where on the Earth it lived, what it ate, and other interesting facts. They may present this as creatively as they wish.

Volunteer Background checks

Message from MMA:

Any adult in the building for an hour or more that could possibly be alone with a child needs to have a background check in our system. All official field trip chaperones also need a background check. This is to keep all of our children safe.

There will be someone at MMA to conduct background checks next week on September 17th at 5pm – before the MAPA begins at 6pm. Volunteers will need to make 2 payments at this time $37 to MMA for processing and $25 to Academica West for doing the live scan. Cash, check, and charge are all accepted.

We realize that it can be tough for some of our families to pay for background checks and we don’t want this to be a barrier to volunteering inside school. Please know that once you’re in this new system (Rapback), you will not have to pay or do this again. If you want to know if they’re already in the system or not, please email Ms. Lana.

Field trip and parent ed night

Hello Parents,

Our first field trip of the year will be Friday, October 11. We will be taking the Frontrunner to the Planetarium. We will have the opportunity to see an IMAX movie and attend a Science Around the Sphere presentation.  If you would like to see the movie and presentation with us, you will need to let me know by October 1st.  The school will be covering the cost of students, but parents who would like to attend will need to pay the Planetarium $6 for the movie. The Planetarium will only allow parents who have notified us by October 1st to attend the movie.  More information and a permission slip for this will follow at a later date.

Our first parent education night this year will be Thursday, September 5th at 5:30 pm. Parents will have an opportunity to do a walkthrough of our school and see some of the materials in action starting from early childhood and moving up through Jr. high. We hope to see you there.

Family picnic

Dear Families,

We are excited to invite you all to a family luncheon that the school is hosting this coming Thursday, August 22, from 12 o’clock noon to 1:00 pm. We would love for you to come and enjoy lunch with our class and then participate in some getting-to-know-you activities.  We are eager to get acquainted with those of you that are new to our school and class and to visit with those of you we haven’t seen since last school year.  Please make sure your child has a sack lunch that does not need to be heated up and bring one for yourself as well as a blanket if you would like.  We hope to see you all there.

Ms. Krista and Ms. Sharon
