Hello!

We had a pretty uninterrupted week.  This coming week we will have a few extra things going on.  February is going to be busy.

I posted the Winter Parent Teacher Conference sign up sheet on Friday afternoon.  Please look at the post below this one and sign up!  I look forward to meeting with all you again!

Past Week:

Level 1s: Writing sentences and language practice, fractions

Level 2s: Protractor intro and protractor measuring

Level 3s: Fractions, area and perimeter

In Cultural lessons: Botany

Level 1s: Roots, roots parts, and foods that are roots

Level 2s: Leaf mosaic activities

Upcoming Week:

Monday we have the cart of computers.  I will be working with Level 3s on typing/formatting paragraph responses through the MyOn program.  Level 2s will also be working on a MyOn assignment Monday morning.  We have the computers until 10:00am and then students will switch to works off their works charts as I do cultural lessons.

Wednesday morning we have our monthly health lesson.

We started a new artist, Henri Matisse.  We talked about him this past Friday and are preparing to do a 3D paper vase project to display for the mini art show that will be going on during PTC.  While you are visiting the Book Fair, please take a moment to look at the art going on in Upper and Lower studio classes.  Ms. Trudy (Mr. John’s assistant) is putting on this mini art show.

The Junior High is selling carnations as part of a fundraiser for their 9th grade field trip.  Here is what I know:

February 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th, and 5th both before and after school they will be on sale near the front office. Carnations will be delivered to the recipient’s classroom on February  8th, after 11:30 am.

Single carnation flower – 3$
Vase – 2$
Card – .50 cents
Valentine’s Party is scheduled for the morning of February 10th (an early out day).  Our room mother will not be able to help out with this party and I am in need of some of you wonderful parents to help me out.  If anyone wants to take over the planning or can help me find activities and help out that morning, please please email me and let me know what you would like to do.
Mr. Will is scheduled to come in and do February’s art project on February 11th in the morning (an early out day)
Scales and Tales is coming with their reptile show on February 24th in the afternoon.  That is considered an in-house field trip.  They will coming back the following month with their bird show.
FIELD TRIP! We are going to the Planetarium via the Frontrunner and Tracks on February 25th (Thursday).  We will be seeing one of their movies and Jalee and I are waiting to hear how to have those parents who are coming and want to see the film pay for it.  The Planetarium wants those ticket payments ahead of time, so we are working that out.  The Frontrunner and Tracks will be a free ride for students.  I may end up with some extra bands, so those parents who are coming with us as chaperones, I will let you know what I end up with.  If you want to be a chaperone for this field trip, email me and let me know!  We are also looking to go to the children’s museum that is across from the Planetarium as an up coming field trip too this year.
I will be talking about our next home project in February, our Science Fair.  Dates and details on when our class does this project (very much like how the International Festival was presented) coming later this month.
Have a great rest of your weekend, or Monday (when this automatically posts!)
Cheers!
Ms. K

Ballet Tickets!

Posted in Field Trips | No Comments »

Hey Everyone!

A few of you have emailed me regarding wanting to come to the ballet with us.  Since the ballet only had space for each class to have 1 chaperone I know that puts many of you out.  However, I asked Jalee if any of you wanted to come if it be possible to buy separate tickets.  She said yes, but if you want to come to buy them ASAP.  You would call Perry’s Egyptian Theater in Ogden.  I can’t guarantee the theater will put you next to your child, but we’ll see what happens!  Let me know if you call and get a ticket 🙂

Thanks!

P.S: November home projects are due NEXT FRIDAY!

Week 9

Posted in Classroom, Field Trips | No Comments »

Hi Everyone!

Updates and Coming Week!

Thank you for coming out to PTC!  Everyone signed up and came on time, so it went smoothly on our end 🙂

Please have your child log into MyOn.  There is a 1st grade assignment from me that is due tomorrow.  1st graders are asked to read 2 books on maps.  2nd and 3rd graders are asked to login as well to have the program get to know your child and to get the assessments running.  So far, I see a few students have logged in: Dustie, Kennedy, Alden, Ella, Stevie, William, and Tiffany.

If I gave you the next reading kit at PTC, it is due Friday, Oct. 23rd.  Misha and Katherine, I will email you to let you know if I need help with putting the next round together this week.  Lori, I forgot to give Ella hers at your conference, but I know she will be able to get it finished by Friday if I give it to her Monday.

Wednesday we have our field trip!  Please, please, please be on time.  I will be at the school to make sure those who are getting rides in the North Shore parking lot are finding their rides.  Please read my post below on Black Island Farms for times on drop off and pick up.  The hayride starts at 9am, so please have your child at the farm by 8:45am so I can take attendance.  We don’t need to stay in one big group when we are there.  I have each parent who is going to watch over a few students.  Ms. Emilee and I will have our own groups as well.

Students are allowed to wear jeans, but please have them in an MMA shirt or shirt with a collar.  Hats and sunglasses are also great things to have too in addition to the list I made in the Black Island Farms post.

Friday is MMA’s Fall Festival!  It is free to get into, but if your child wants to do any of the games there is a fee/wristbands.  Starts at 4 and goes until 7.  Come out and support our school!  This is the time for your child to dress up at our school.  Our school does not allow Halloween costumes while at school.

Volunteers this week?:  Anyone want to do spelling or reading this week?  Email me and I will plan accordingly.  Remember we are out Wednesday and on Thursday from 12:45-1:45 the students have a lesson from UMFA in the library.

Past Week:

We took a break from regular work cycle and did some Christopher Columbus activities on Monday, Botany lessons and Scholastic reading on Tuesday, and a Botany art project Wednesday.  We did keep up with Botany for cultural during these half days.

Cultural lessons- Botany

Level 1s:  Plants through the seasons and what are the seasons?

Level 2s: Plant margins intro and Simple/Compound leaves

Level 3s: Solitary/Inflorescence flowers

Level 2 Cultural Project (Level 3s invited too)

Level 2s are well into their leaves lessons in Botany.  Students who wish to collect a variety of leaves from trees can bring them in to identify, iron into wax paper to make a leaf book, measure, and to study their leaf shapes we have been learning about.  If your 2nd grader or 3rd grader is interested, have them collect leaves and bring them in when they are ready.  Not a required project, but most 2nd graders wanted to do it when I asked them about it.

Upcoming:

3rd graders will be taking their PRACTICE SAGE tests soon!  November 2nd will be Language and November 4th will be Math.  I oversee these tests as 1st and 2nd graders work in the classroom

Please put on your calendars that our next field trip will be to see The Nutcracker at The Egyptian Theater in Ogden.  It is December 7th at 12:00pm.  A bus will take our class and 2 other lower el classrooms going too.  We will do a mini work cycle in the morning, eat an early lunch/recess and then leave for the ballet.  Students will return to the school when it is over for regular pick up.

Week of January 12th

Posted in Classroom, Field Trips | No Comments »

Hope you are enjoying your long weekend!

Candy Orders!

A Sees Candy form went out this week.  Students have until this Friday to sell candy if they would like since Valentine’s Day is around the corner!  Please bring in all forms by Friday morning.

3rd Grade Writing Test

The 3rd grade writing test for our class will take place February 17th in the afternoon from 12:30-3.  We usually do a 3rd grade breakfast on a testing day, but since it is in the afternoon maybe something else can be thought of?  Any suggestions and help on that would be appreciated!

Planetarium

Our trip to The Clark Planetarium will be February 18th.  We will be taking the Frontrunner to SLC for this field trip. We will be going with Ms. Jalee’s class as well.  We have an itinerary for times, however, they are good until a week before our trip, so we will be double checking to make sure everything is in order for The Frontrunner the closer we get.  What you need to know right now is that on this day we will ALL be meeting at 2393 Wall Ave in Ogden by 7:45am.  The train is scheduled to leave at 8:07am.  If you are late, we will leave with out your child and you will have to drive him or her to the Planetarium.  No exceptions.  Please plan accordingly.  We are due back to 2393 Wall Ave. at 3pm.  Please make sure drop off and pick up is at the train station.

If any parents are going, we will be seeing an IMAX film.  Adults who are coming with us will have to pay small fee for the IMAX.  Between Jalee’s class and ours we have the maximum amount to fit in the theater.  It may be possible, that not every adult is going to fit in the theater, so just a heads up about that.

Permission slips are going to be handed out during conferences, so they don’t get lost in backpacks.  When you come to see us, you will sign it there 🙂

Valentine’s Day Party

The week of February 9th is the week of Parent Teacher Conferences.  They start the 10th and go until Thursday the 12th.  February 12th is when I would like to have a little Valentine’s Party.  The kids can exchange cards and do some activities. This will take place in the morning as the 10th-12th are all Early Dismissals.  Anyone wanting to help, please contact Jaida Ryan.

This week in group lessons:

Level 1s: Time to the hour assessment, horizontal and vertical lines

Level 2s: Money assessment, how to measure right angles and straight with a protractor

Level 3s: Utah Compose overview, Fractions on a number line

In cultural: History

Level 1s: Time to the hour (practice at home!)

Have a great upcoming week!

Week of Oct. 13

Posted in Classroom, Field Trips | No Comments »

Hello!

It has been so great to be back and to be working with the kids again.  It was also great to meet and/or see you parents this past week!

I have been busy giving lessons!  I will continue to catch up on individual lessons and start level lessons this coming week.

Things to be discussing/doing with your child:

– Make sure they are brining home their spelling flash cards on Mondays.  I will do my best on my end to make sure they go home.

– Are they doing their red works (most important).  If not, what other areas were they working in.  Sometimes some blue works will need to be done.

– Have them read 20 mins a day.  Audiobooks and comics are good motivators for those who don’t like to read or have trouble reading.

-Practice their spelling words with them.  Can they say and spell their words?  Can they use their words in a sentence.  Can they alphabetize their words?  These are skills that help promote reading, comprehension, and testing skills.

-3rd grade parents: have your child be typing at home.  BBC typing program is free and is super fun.  Have them type any of our projects in programs such as Microsoft Word.  It will help get them used to their upcoming writing test in the spring.

This coming week (Week of Oct. 20th)

We are going to Black Island Farms on Thursday the 23rd.  I know some of you will be meeting us at Black Island Farms.  The rest of the students come to the school at normal time.  We will be leaving MMA at 8:50am via private vehicles.  Here are my drivers so far:

Drivers:

Sarah: Aiden, Bridger (willing to take, if ok with you Marian!)

Braydon: Alexis & Bryn

Kim: Reagan

Antoinette: Tanner, Logan (Ms. Jalee’s student), + 1 available seat

Michelle: Jaycee + 3 available seats

Austin: Brenna + 5 available seats (certified driver)

Annabelle: Tiffany

Darci: Amira

Jessica: Gabe

Steve: Stevie (undecided)

That is 19/20 of our students taken care of.  I could use a few more for driving, even if a grandparent would like to go.  Email me if you can drive.

If Asher and Ty would like to attend the field trip, please come into my room and sign their permission slips 🙂

*IMPORTANT: Most of class is being taken to the field trip by their own parent.  If a parent has room for other children and they ARE NOT A CERTIFIED driver by MMA, please make the arrangement for your child to go with one of these parents from our class.  Also, siblings ARE allowed to come to the field trips, you just have to pay for yourself and your other child to go.  Your child attending MMA has the priority to do the activities.  Your other child may not be able to do some of the activities because our field trips are for our MMA students.

Please pack a disposable lunch for your child

We will be departing Black Island Farms at 1:30pm

Black Island Farm’s website link is below in the last post.  If you can, donate $4.00 to cover this field trip cost.

This Friday, Oct 24th, we will be continuing our study on the 3 states of matter. We will be doing root beer floats as an example!  Kristy, if you still want to help, please email me.  Let me know if any of you can help bring Solo cups, plastic spoons, liters of root beer, and 2 large tubs of vanilla ice cream!

The Fall Festival carnival is this Friday Oct 24th from 4:30-7:30!  No masks, please.  I will see you there!

Please email our room mother Jaida Ryan if you would like to help with our classroom Halloween party!  jaidabrown@mail.weber.edu;

DoTerra:

I am happy to announce that we will be diffusing essential oils in our classroom!  I am a DoTerra oil user and have many different ones.  I will be diffusing scents like Citrus Bliss, Purify, Lemon, Wild Orange, On Guard, Peppermint, and Lavender to name a few.  Studies have been done and show that essential oils help students concentrate, focus, their emotions, and have raised test scores.  Oils like On Guard and Purify are natural detoxifiers of germs and bacteria.  If you too are a DoTerra user and would like to donate oils to our classroom it would be very much appreciated!  Ms. LaVonna and I are very excited to share the many benefits of DoTerra oils with our class.

Important Upcoming Info!

Hello everyone!

I will be returning to the classroom next Monday, the 6th!

Conferences!

Our first round of conferences are approaching.  Please look to the right of our blog and click the link to sign up for conferences.  Since I have been on maternity leave, Ms. Anna and I will be there and Ms. LaVonna will be there for as many as she can.  These two ladies have done a wonderful job running the class and will be sharing with you:

-DIBELS and/or UURC Reading Score

-Writing sample

-Math Assessment/Sample

-MMA progress report

I will have been with your child for a week before conferences start, so my plan of action is to show you plans I have to track to your child’s progress and hear any goals, concerns, and/or questions from you and/or Ms. Anna.  Fall conferences are mostly about observation and what goals we want your child to work towards until the next time we meet (2nd conference)

If you are my two families who has their child in Ms. Suzie’s class, please sign up on her conference sheet.  I had to create a break for myself so I could take care of some personal things for my baby.  There are 27 spots open, so everyone should get a spot!

Black Island Farms Field Trip!

On October 23rd (a Thursday), our class will be taking its first field trip to Black Island Farms in Syracuse.  Our class and Ms. Jalee’s class will be attending.  If you would like to drive your child, or you are certified driver to take other children, please sign up to drive!  Once I am back, I will make up the permission slips and find out the time.
