Homework Update and October Parent Teacher Conference Sign Up

Good Morning!

Thanks to all of our parents who volunteered for our field trip to the NHMU.  It was a great success and the kids had a great time.  The level 4 and 5 workshops were really fantastic!  I will definitely plan this field trip again next year.

Because your children have a book report and their science fair question due next Tuesday, September 30, there will be no new IXL homework this week.  They should continue working on the previous IXL homework if they have not already completed it.

We have been learning about what makes a complete sentence, and this week we are focusing on all the parts of the sentence that make a Great sentence.  As such, we have studied strong verbs and how and when parts (aka prepositions).  Your children will have homework tonight that will help them understand  Dead Verbs (weak verbs and “be” verbs).

Our first Parent Teacher Conference is coming up October 13-15.  Please sign up for a 30 minutes slot.  The sign-up is available on the right-hand sidebar.

~Cheers

Final Parent Teacher Conference Sign Up

After further consideration, I will be holding individual parent teacher conferences at the end of this month.  Please sign up for a 20 minute slot at the link below, and on the side bar.  Again, these are student led conferences.  Come see how we ended our year and find out how you can help your child stay up to speed this summer.  I will have information for a variety of summer community programs available.

Important Dates, Please Mark Your Calendars

With the year coming to a close, we have several events happening.  Please take note of these dates and mark your calendars.

The most important, upcoming event is taking place tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, May 8.   This full scale evacuation drill will take place between the hours of noon and 3 pm.  Someone MUST be available to pick your children up from school.   Please ensure your emergency contact information is up to date.  If there have been any recent changes, please contact the office to we can get this squared away.  If the person who arrives is not an approved contact, your child will not be released to them.   Because the police and fire departments will be using the school to conduct their own training drills, your students will not be allowed back into the school after the drill.  Any personal items, including shoes, lunchboxes and coats, can be retrieved on Friday, May 9th.

Now for the less serious events.

May 23rd – Field Day (please send your child with sunscreen, hat and                                              appropriate clothing for spending the day outside).

May 26th – No school – Memorial Day

May 27th – Read-a-thon  (children can bring blankets and a pillow).

May 28th- Crazy hair or hat day

May 29th- Crazy sock day and 6th grade Graduation (10:30-12:00)

May 30th – PJ day and yearbook signing.  PJs must meet our friday dress                                      code.  No characters, shorts shorter than knee length, or tank                                      tops.

The final week of school, May 27th through May 30th, are early release days.  We have Parent Teacher Conferences  Tuesday, May 27th through Thursday, May 29th.  These will be student led, group type conferences as we saw during the last round of conferences.  I will have a sign up sheet available by Friday, May 9th.  If you wish to have an individual conference, please contact me by email so I can schedule that for you.  Otherwise feel free to sign up for the time that will fit best into your schedule.

California Here We Come

The day is finally here. The 6th grade students are heading out to their annual field-trip to Alliance Redwoods. Last week proved a little challenging for everyone, trying to maintain focus while being extremely excited for the trip. I sensed a little envy from our 4th and 5th level students, but that’s to be expected, and they have their 6th grade field trip to look forward to.

I will be joining the 6th levels as a chaperone. Your children will be in the capable hands of Ms. Kari as well as Ms. Heather, Hailey’s mom. I will be back in the classroom Monday, May 5th, ready to finish out our year. Which brings me to my next point. We have a field trip planned to the Leonardo Museum Tuesday, May 6. I know that it is a quick turn around for our 6th level students but we wanted to be able to fit in a whole class field trip before the end of the year, and boy it is coming fast! Watch for a permission slip to come home with your students this week. The trip will not cost anything, we have obtained a generous grant from the USOE that will pay for admission to the museum, as well as pay for the workshop. Ms. Kirsten’s class will be accompanying us as well.

Important dates:

May 6th: Leonardo Field trip
May 7th: Language Arts SAGE
May 14th: Math SAGE
May 21st: Science SAGE

We also have a meeting for our 5th grade students and their parents somewhere in there. Details to come. This meeting is mandatory for all 5th level students who will be returning next year as 6th grade students. This meeting will introduce expectations for fundraising for their 6th grade field trip as well as required volunteer hours.

Please plan on attending a parent teacher conference the final week of school. Conference times will be available to sign up via WeSignIn after we return from our 6th level field trip. Just as last session, these will be group conferences, led by your child. At this conference we will discuss their accomplishments as well as summer school work expectations so that they all return ready to hit the pavement running.

As a reminder, your children need to be practicing SAGE at home so they are familiar with the functionality of the program. It is quite different from what we have seen in the past. You can go to this link https://login1.cloud2.tds.airast.org/student/V27/Pages/LoginShell.aspx?c=Utah_PT

Sign in as a guest, select your student’s grade level, and allow them to work on the practice test. Since we have completed the writing exam, this can be bypassed. The language test is next in line, so I recommend this be the focus for the week. Thank you for following up with your child so they can be as prepared as possible. At this time, we do not have access to computers in the classroom so the only practice they will have is at home. It is imperative that they practice at home. We also have our IXL account, which will be good practice for math skills. Your students should spend at minimum 20 minutes each night on SAGE and IXL. Their passwords and user id for IXL are in the back of their planners.

See you next week!

~Cheers
