Week 7 – Home Project Reminder – 4th grade AWHC Field Trip

Good afternoon!  I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful fall weekend!

A reminder that our first Home Project is due Wednesday, October 3.   Guidelines for the assignment can be found at this blog post.

Our 4th grade students will be attending a grade level field trip this Thursday, October 4.  Please be sure you review the guidelines on the cover letter that accompanied the permission slip.  Weather this time of year can be variable so please check the conditions prior to sending your child to school on Thursday. Students will be taking a bus to and from the field trip and must be on time to school.  Because the bus is on a very strict schedule, we cannot wait for tardy children.

Week 5 – Field Trip Update

Good evening.

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend.  I was able to hike Skull Crack Trail at Causey Reservoir to watch the Kokanee Salmon run.  What a beautiful experience!   They will still be running for the next several days, so if you have the opportunity to take your family for an evening hike this week, I highly recommend this.

The first field trip of the year is this Friday, September 21.  We are still in need of rides for 10 students.  If we do not have the carpool arrangements worked out by Tuesday evening, our class will not be able to attend this trip.  I understand several parents have volunteered as drivers and chaperones, but we are still in need of more.  Please contact Natalie, our room mom, as soon as possible if you are able to volunteer your time this week.

Tomorrow we begin our Botany lessons with Ms. Rachael.  Rachael is a dear friend of mine, and an amazing Botanist. We are extremely lucky to have her as an instructor in our school.  Her knowledge of, and excitement for, Botany is unmatched!  Please be sure you ask your child what they learned from Ms. Rachael. The more often they share their learning, the more “sticky” it becomes.

Wednesday, our 4th grade students will attend an assembly with Dan “The Weatherman” Guthrie.  During this presentation, they will learn about meteorology.

Finally, we will be utilizing Imagine Learning as the platform to practice math outside the classroom.  This program is new to Upper Elementary this year and will replace IXL.  We will login to Imagine Learning for the first time Thursday during class.  After this, your child will be able to access this program from home.   More details about utilizing this resource to complete homework assignments will be provided within the next couple of weeks.

Have a wonderful week!

1st Week Recap

Like all good things, the first week of school flew by!

Your kids began learning classroom and school expectations, participated in team building activities and had their first lessons in math.  We read stories about the first day of school around the world (It’s Back to School We Go), the importance of being kind (Each Kindness), and a retelling of Booker T. Washington’s first experience with reading (More Than Anything Else).   Each of these books sparked writing and discussions about family and cultural traditions, the consequences of our actions (both good and bad) and the importance of education.

We kick started our studies of the Universe by reading a version of the Greek Myth of Icarus called Icarus at The Edge of Time.   After the story and discussion, students worked in small groups to order objects in the Universe from smallest to largest.  This group’s ability to explain their thinking backed up with evidence is amazing!  Ms. Kari and I feel blessed with this class full of thinkers.

Your child should have brought home their planner each day this week as well as a weekly work evaluation on Friday.  Please make sure you are reviewing and signing planners daily and reviewing and signing the work evaluations on Friday.  Reviewing planners and evaluations is a  great way to begin a conversation with your child about their work in the classroom.  You will begin to see their planners fill up as we dive into more work each week.  By mid-September your child should have quite a bit of work for you to chat with them about.

Thank you all for getting your child to school on time each day.   Work begins as soon as your child walks into the classroom, and lessons often start promptly after the bell rings.   Being on time allows your child to participate fully in each day’s activities.

Finally, our first class field trip is on Friday, September 21.  We are going to The Freedom’s Light Festival, a celebration of the Constitution.  I will reach out to you all with carpool needs within the next week and permission slips will go home after Labor Day.

JA Biztown Wednesday, March 14

Good evening 5th grade families!  This Wednesday, March 14 is our 5th grade (and some 6th grade) field trip to JA City.  Your kids have been working hard writing business plans, filling out loan applications and preparing their checkbooks for this experience.

In order for our trip to run as smoothly as possible, please make sure you have signed up for a ride to Biztown for your child.  A link was sent out in an email this morning.

You are responsible for ensuring your child gets into the vehicle in which you have assigned them.  Please do not drop them off at North Shore and drive away without their driving knowing they have arrived. In order for all volunteers to arrive on time for their training, vehicles must depart from North Shore at 7:30.

If your student did not pre-order lunch from Chick-fil-A, they will need to pack a sack lunch that does not require heating.

Lastly, we will arrive back to school for regular end of day pick up.
