For those of you interested in volunteering to read in the classroom, please send me the day and time you are available. I will put together a schedule. We have been talking about our reading specialist doing a training for the parents. I will get back to you with more details.

Pumpkin Decorating Exhibit

I thought it would be fun to have a Pumpkin Exhibit on Friday, October 31st. This will be optional. If you choose to participate, you will need a pumpkin (any size) and have your child decorate the pumpkin at home. The child can decorate (not carve) their pumpkin to look like their favorite scary character. It can be a literary character, an original monster, or one of the standard favorites (ghosts, witches, vampires). We will display all the pumpkins in the classroom. Each child will make a formal invitation to invite students from other classes to view the exhibit.

Fall Festival 2014

The Fall Festival has been changed to Friday, October 24th. Please let me know if you are interested in helping at our booth. This is always a fun event for the children to show off their costumes and participate in many activities. The 6th graders will be selling food to help raise money for their end of year field trip.

Interest Based Home Projects

Greetings,

In class we have talked thoroughly about what the expectations are for a home project. I understand not all student will fully know what I’m talking about. Each home project will have a different topic. The first home project is their choice, to help them get excited about researching. Here is an outline of each grade level expectations. They will all need a visual aide. The visual aide is their creative representation of whatever they decide to research about e.g. mobile, diorama, pictures, drawings, clay model, origami etc.

Grade 1: Depending on their ability, they will need handwritten/typed words or sentences.

Grade 2: In their own words, at least 4 sentences handwritten/typed.

Grade 3: In their own words at least 2 paragraphs handwritten/typed.

They will present their projects to the class. These can be done anytime throughout the month of October. The last day the students can present their project is Wednesday, October 29th.

Peer Mentoring Program

Hello Families,

Our school is implementing a peer mentoring program this year. We have the privilege of mentoring with Ms. Amy’s class.  We got together last week and remembered 9-11 together.  We discussed the happenings of that awful day, watched a power point honoring the heroes who sacrificed their lives, and made a craft with Ms. Amy’s class.  It was a lot of fun!

Yesterday we joined Ms. Amy’s in making a “Hands for Peace” poster for the front of the school.  We celebrating “Peace Day.”  The children have all made pinwheels to display in the front lawn of the school.  We are calling them “Pinwheels for Peace.”

Next week, we are going on our field trip to the Duck Pond with Ms. Amy’s class. Please let me know if you are interested in joining us.

Duck Pond Field Trip

Our first field trip of the year will be on Thursday, September 25th.  We will be going to the Bicentennial Park / Duck Pond in North Ogden.  We are sharing this field trip with Ms. Amy’s upper elementary class.

We will leave Maria Montessori Academy at 9:00 a.m. and walk to the Duck Pond next to Lee’s Marketplace.  While we are at the Duck Pond we will study erosion and the water cycle.

We will eat lunch at the park and then return to school at about 1:00 or 1:30.

Look for the permission slip in the next couple of days.  This field trip is FREE.  We are looking for two parent volunteers to join us on our field trip.  Please let me know if you are interested. :)
