Take Home Folders

Happy Friday!

Today your student is bringing home their take home folder for the first time.  Inside this folder you will find some flyers, possibly an engineering design challenge solution (some students chose to put this in their portfolios) and a work tracker evaluation form.

Because we have been doing team building exercises this week, we have not yet used a work tracker.  In an attempt to form good habits right away, I sent the folders home today.  I asked your student(s) to answer the second part of question number four about goals for next week.  Most students did this in class, as is the expectation.  In the event that they didn’t (we were doing this at the very end of the day), please have them complete this at home and sign the evaluation.

Your responsibility, as a parent, is to review the work in the folder, keeping everything with the exception of the work chart evaluation form which needs to be signed and returned on Monday with the take home folder.  If you have any comments or questions regarding work that came home, please record them on the evaluation form and I will address them by Tuesday start of school.

If your student has unfinished work from the week, this will also come home in the folder and will need to be completed and returned on Mondays.

Things to Note for the First Day and Week of School

I can’t believe school is beginning on Monday!  I’m so excited to see my returning students and get to know the new students even better.

Returning Students: Don’t forget your homework assignments (10-15 hours of math practice logged on the sheet that went home at the end of the year, and 2 book reports).  If you still need a template for your book reports you will find a good one at the following link.

New and Returning Students:

  • Please bring all school supplies, if you haven’t already, to school on Monday.  We will be preparing our notebooks and sorting all our supplies the first day of school.
  • Don’t forget to double check the dress code policy.  It can be found on the school’s website as well as in this post.   This year the dress code will be strictly enforced, and warnings will be sent home, in addition to a phone call home, for students who do not comply with dress code.  If you have questions about a particular item of clothing, have your child bring it to school, before wearing, to check in with the office.
  • Pack a lunch and snack, if desired, for your children.  Please make sure that you and your child are working together to ensure the choices are healthy.  In addition, sending your child with a water bottle that can be kept in the classroom throughout the week will help your child stay hydrated.
  • I strongly recommend applying sunscreen each morning before school, and encourage students to bring sunscreen to keep in their lockers.  We will be spending quite a bit of time outside the first few weeks and I want everyone to stay safe in the sun.
  •  This year, we will have silent, independent reading each day after recess.  Please have your child bring a book with them so that they are able to read.  The first book report is due September 30, and the genre the students will need to focus on is fiction.  This is a great way for them to get a jump start on this assignment.

School starts at 8:30, doors open at 8:15.  Pick up during the first week of school is 1:00pm.  PLEASE be patient and courteous while everyone learns the drop off routine, it can be a little hectic during the first few weeks of school.

See you all (at least your students) Monday!

Social Media

I want to inform everyone of my personal policy to not participate in social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) with parents or students.

I believe that this is the most effective way to maintain professional objectivity, and eliminate the possibility of any inappropriate communicative contact.

Please understand, and respect, the rationale behind this policy.  Please do not send any requests for “friendship” or connection on social media.

Snack and Lunch

This year in room 24 we are going to try something a little different for our snack.

I would ask if you and your child feel a daily snack is necessary that you pack something  extra in their lunch that they can have during morning work cycle.   We will not have a sign up sheet to provide snack for the entire class.

A small piece of fruit, a cheese stick, almonds, a small muffin, carrots,  mini bagel with peanut butter or cream cheese are all healthy options.  Please do not send candy, popcorn, chips and salsa or any item that needs microwaving.  Snack is meant to provide a quick boost of energy before lunch, and is not something that should consume a great part of your child’s work cycle.

Speaking of lunch, we eat lunch each day at 12:00-12:30.  Please assist your child in packing a healthy lunch each day.  Fresh fruit and healthy proteins are a wonderful way to ensure your child has energy to sustain  them through the afternoons at school.  We are very busy all day and it is imperative that they don’t burn out or crash because they aren’t eating well during lunch time.

Things to note:

  • No red drinks or yogurt with red dye, please.  If they spill, they will stain our carpets.
  • Microwave items need to take less than one minute to heat.  We have 28 students and space for one microwave, if everyone brings something to heat, the entire lunch period is over before they even get to heat their food.  Better options are foods that don’t require heating, or a thermal container to keep food warm until lunch.
  • No candy, gum, chocolate or other items that fall into the category of “candy”.
  • No placemats to begin the year please.  We found that placemats create a larger mess than they contain so we will be starting out without this year.  If we find this is a mistake, we will request a placemat later.
  • No fast food as a replacement for a healthy home packed lunch.  This is a school policy.

If you have any questions about lunch or snack, please don’t hesitate to ask.

~Cheers

Dress Code Update

As you are preparing to come back to school, please remember to read the dress code policy as it has changed. I had several new families asking about it last night so I am leaving the link to the policy here.

Dress Code Policy

As a reminder for our returning families, and an introduction for our new families, your students are required to have a pair of indoor shoes.   These can be a slip-on ballet type or a simple house slipper style, but please be sure that there are no characters, logos or fluffy animals.

If you have any questions about the dress code policy, please contact the school office.  They are always happy to answer your questions.
