Upcoming Field Trips

Good Evening,

Just wanted to inform you all of our upcoming field trips. The way that the scheduling worked out, we will have two in one week but one will only be for 2 hours in the morning.

The first field trip is to the Ogden Nature Center on 12th Street. We will be going on this field trip with Ms. Kirsten’s class. It will be Monday, October 24. This is a morning field trip that will only be from 9 to 11 a.m. We will be participating in the Field Ecology field trip. This includes:

  • Study of what lives in a field and how all living and non-living elements interact
  • Learn about the plants and animals that live in Ogden Nature Center fields
  • Predator/Prey relationships
  • What is a true insect
  • What role to humans play in a field ecosystem
  • Seed dispersal-how seeds move

The field trip supervisor at the nature center told me this is his favorite field trip. We are excited to go. We will need parent chaperones and drivers. I have created a wejoinin signup sheet. If you can go please signup with your name and if you can transport students to and from, please provide the number of kids you can take, including your child. If you cannot go, but can transport your own child to, from, or both, please let me know. https://www.wejoinin.com/sheets/kiyxt

The second field trip will be Wednesday, October 26th. We will be going to Black Island Farms. This is a field trip we go on every year and the kids love. Black Island Farms is in Syracuse and about a 20 to 30 minute drive from the school. We get to go on a wagon ride and learn about the crops grown at the farm. Each child then gets to pick out a small pumpkin to take home. The rest of the day is spent exploring the farm which includes a bounce house, slides, swings, pig races, a corn maze, and more. This field trip is scheduled from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. We will also need drivers and chaperones for this. Is you are able to chaperone please sign up on the wejoinin page. If you are able to transport students, please include the number you can take, including your child. If you cannot go, but can transport your own child to, from, or both, please let me know. https://www.wejoinin.com/sheets/ndpjy

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Rumbi Wednedays

Hello,

I just wanted to remind everyone the Rumbi Grill will provide lunch for your child on Wednesdays if you order it. They have a Teriyaki chicken bowl and an orange chicken bowl. I have had them both and they are both good. They are large enough to be enough lunch for me, and they only cost $4 each. Here is a picture of the Teriyaki chicken. 20160921_120818_resized If you would like to order one of these bowls for you child to eat for lunch on Wednesdays, use the link https://secureinstantpayments.com?Event=2375. The orders must be placed by the Monday before the Wednesday you would like to have the bowl. I have found that sometimes the link doesn’t work but if you try it again a bit later, it usually will work fine.

Please let Melanie in the office know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Book Report

Hello All,

I know you will all think I am crazy telling you about our next home project since we haven’t even finished presenting the first, but here it is.

For our next home project we will be doing a book report. We are trying a sort of experiment this year for this book report. We would like students to prepare their book reports at school this year and present them to you at parent teacher conferences. We will still need your help. Please help your child pick a book and, if needed, read it with them. Next week we will be working with students to pick a book and start the project. If they do not have the books read yet, that is okay. But the sooner they have the book read, the better. If your child is unable to tell me what book they are doing, I will email you for the title.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks a bunch.

Almost October

Hello,

Can you believe it’s almost October already? And can you believe the weather we had this last week? I am very excited for the Fall weather. I love the colors and the feeling in the air.

We will continue doing the food drive through this week. Also, home projects are due in the next two weeks. Your child can bring it in any day and present it. If it is a power point, I need a couple days notice so I can reserve a projector. For more information on the home projects, please see last week’s post. We will be having parent teacher conferences in about three weeks. They will be Monday – Wednesday, October 17, 18, 19. I will have a sign up for this soon.

We were unable to go outside to recess Friday so we had recess in the classroom. Ms. Marleen brought a small parachute that we played with. We used this and a large ball to practice self control and understanding where our bodies are and how they are moving.

Since we are studying North America until January, we did state research in small groups Friday as well. We also had a small lesson on thunderstorms and tornadoes. In cultural we were focusing on Geography. Level 1s learned about lines of longitude and latitude; level 2s learned about the layers of the earth; and level 3s learned about the atmosphere.

Thursday was the International Day of Peace. We all met outside and sang our song, “Light a Candle for Peace.” It was amazing and wonderful. 20160921_094756_resized 20160921_094754_resized

We are continuing to use things from our garden in our classroom.  For snack one day we. had cucumbers that we harvested

Squash Soup

This soup is more of a cream soup, not a chunky one.
Ingredients:

4 Cups Chicken Stock
1 Cup Water
1 Med onion, peeled and quartered
4-5 medium sized crook neck squash, quartered (Take out seeds if they are large, if the seeds are tiny, hey will blend, so you can leave them in)
3-4 med potatoes, cut in pieces, can peel them but don’t need to
3/4 Cup Sour Cream
1 Cup whole milk or half and half
Cubed ham or bacon bits to add texture and flavor *optional
Salt to taste

Directions:
In a large soup pot combine the first 5 ingredients. Bring to a boil. Cover pot and reduce heat to medium, to keep a low boil. Cook Vegetables 15-20 min or until potatoes are fork tender.

Transfer contents of pot into a blender and blend until smooth. This may need to be done in batches and be very careful, it’s extremely HOT!

Pour blended soup back into pot. Add the milk and sour cream and optional ham or bacon. Stir until the sour cream has melted and incorporated into soup.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Can be served with bread sticks or biscuits, yummy!

Lots to Say

Hello,

Please bare with me through this post as there are a lot of things I need to share.

First, thanks to everyone who was able to make it out to the 5K yesterday! It was a lot of fun and we had a good time.

Second, I need to apologize for dropping the ball on our first home project. They are supposed to be due these next two weeks. However, since I failed to remind you and give you specific details, I will accept them up until October 7th. The topic of this home project is “I wonder…” This can be anything your child wants to know more about as long as it is school appropriate. Please help your child research something they are interested in. While doing the home projects, we will be working on eye contact, speaking loudly, speaking clearly, and other good presentation skills.we would like the students to use their poster boards/papers as a guide instead of as a “book” to read to the audience. The pictures should only  tell a story or convey information. This helps all of the children have interest in hearing about the topic, be engaged during the presentation, and ask relevant questions afterwards, and in general seemed to retain more of the information presented. More importantly the children feel so proud of themselves when they see the audience react that way!

That said, we would like home projects to be a picto-presentation; meaning that the poster board, power point etc should only contain pictures, which the children then will use as talking points. We also encourage questions by the presenter during the presentation to help spark the audience’s interest. Here is some information about why we feel a picto-presentation would be perfect to get the children started on engaging presentations:

“Firstly, the places where pictograms are used are typically places where there’s a necessity to convey a message quickly, like for example a stop sign that helps to prevent an accident. Secondly, a pictogram needs to be memorable, and since an “image speaks a thousand words”, it serves this purpose much better than text, in terms of memorability. In other words, a pictogram tells a story very fast without someone needing to actually read anything.” -Successful Presentations for Elementary Students

Having your child use a few note cards with their own handwriting and their own sentences or key words that can help them remember what they want to say is a good way to remember their key info.  Our goal is for your children to be able to stand in front of a group and re tell the information they learned through their research without reading directly from a typed text or excerpt. We truly  believe that learning to speak and share information at a young age enables children to grow into young people that are not afraid to speak, and express themselves in front of a group. This is a skill that when learned at an early age will hugely benefit your children for the rest of their school career. Please take a few minutes at dinner or bedtime to have your child retell to you or their siblings five key points that  they think they would like to present to the class when the time comes.

We will be using a simple presentation rubric to help provide feedback for your child. We will send a copy of it home this week. I will also do a small presentation of my own home project to show the kids and example of a home project.

This Tuesday is the first box tops store of the year. Your child can bring in box tops and for every five, get a ticket. The tickets can be used to purchase things like school supplies, water bottles, etc. Please make sure the box tops are cut out and not expired.

We are doing original projects again this year. For these the students create a piece of art and it can then be put onto things such as a pillow, shirt, bag, cards, etc. You can order something with your child’s work on it. The proceeds go towards our classroom. We are using money from last year so we can go on more field trips this year. We made our artwork Friday and it turned out beautiful. I will keep you updated on ordering when I get more info.

Using squash from our garden, we made squash soup on Friday. I got the recipe from one of our amazing parents and she provided us with all the other ingredients besides the squash and we cooked up the soup and had it with lunch. Most of the kids loved it! We were surprised by how many of them ate it and wanted seconds. Here is the line for more.

W
e are getting a lot of squash from our garden so we plan on making the soup again. I have also had many requests by the kids to put the recipe on the blog so I will do that in another post. We also used cantaloupe from our garden for snack two days this week and we have a lot of cucumbers we will also be using.

Here are some fun pictures from work cycle this week.
