Zoom Meetings for this Week

Hello,

I got my weeks mixed up. There will be no community meeting this Thursday. That will be next week. We will plan on having our Thursday Zoom meeting this Thursday evening at 6 pm like we did last week. We had great attendance and want to do it at the same time. We will still have our morning one tomorrow, Tuesday at 9:30. This week we will be talking about leaf patterns and geometric shapes you can find in nature.

Also, when you pick up your next packet you will probably notice that it contains much more than 2 weeks worth of material. Please use any extra work as you see fit through the rest of the month or even into the summer.

Take care and thank you!

Jalee

May is Here

Welcome May! And it starts off rainy and a bit chilly. We have been having wonderful spring weather lately. Not terribly hot and with some showers. My kids and I have been enjoying some wonderful walks around the neighborhood and they have loved running through sprinklers already.

As we enter into our last couple weeks of school, here are some important dates coming up. The last day that any assignments can be turned in is May 15th. Please make sure your hard copy work charts or emails with work details are turned in by this date. If you did not email me and request not getting a packet, your hard copy work for your student is at the front of the school in my basket. These baskets are at the front of the school across from the office. If you have not picked up the bag with your child’s personal belongings (slippers, waterbottles, etc.) please do this by the 15th. All things left behind will be given away or donated.
All works will be kept the same for the remaining weeks of the school year.

I will have a sign up on wejoinin.com for parent teacher conferences by the end of this coming week. These conferences will be held virtually via Zoom. If you are unable to do it via Zoom, we can do a phone call. Progress reports will be sent through the mail. These conferences will be help Tuesday-Thursday, May 19-21.

Level 3 Parents
We will be holding our level 3 bridging ceremony the evening of Monday, May 18th at 6:30 p.m. We are hoping by doing it in the evening and telling you about it this early, you will be able to make it work with your schedule. We will be holding this celebration virtually. We will have a Zoom meeting with all level 3s. Parents are of course welcome to attend, but please make sure your level 3 child is there and able to watch. We will be doing a slideshow to honor all level 3s and announcing their names like if we were doing it in person. For this, we are asking that all level 3 parents send a picture of your child to me by this coming Friday, the 8th.

Level 1 and 2 Parents
For any level 1s and 2s who will be returning to my class next year, I sent home your child’s notebooks. If they are not filled up, please feel free to send those notebooks back when requested next year. I did not send home your child’s binders. We will keep these for next year and continue adding works to them.

We will have our Tuesday Zoom meeting at 9:30 a.m. as always. I am debating what to do for our Thursday meeting. We had an awesome turn out doing it at 6 p.m. However, that is the same time the school is doing a community meeting so I am need to talk to Ms. Tiffany about when to do it instead. I will keep you updated on this.

As always, thank you for your support. Thank you for all you are doing during these uncertain times. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Best!

Jalee

End of April

Hello Everyone!

Can you believe that this is the last week of April? I am so glad we are getting nice spring weather. We are supposed to get in the 70s next week. I hope you are all able to get outside with your families, go for walks, play in the yard, whatever you can while still practicing social distance and safety.

Thank you all for all you are doing to work with your child or children. I know it has not been an easy adjustment. Even as a trained teacher, teaching my own child is hard. I really appreciate all that you are all doing to work with your own families. Thank you all!

I wanted to let you know about our plan as a lower el team for the reminder of the school year, starting May 4th. Thank you to everyone who was able to take the survey. As a team we used the information given on it to make our decision for May. We are going to move forward with the final weeks of school in May the same way we have been doing distance learning thus far. We will provide paper packets for all who would like them, and continue using our digital resources for all who use those as well. I will be making a paper packet for everyone unless I hear from you. If you do not want a paper packet for the final weeks of school, please send me an email as soon as you can. These packets will be available to pick up starting the first week of May. I will remind you again next week.

We will be doing Parent Teacher Conferences the same week we had it scheduled for before school was closed. We will do it via Zoom meetings. Sign ups will be available first part of May. We will also be doing a celebration of level 3s bridging to upper el. When we have a definitive plan, we will let you know.

I have greatly appreciated all who have been able to join our Zoom meetings. Ms. Tiffany and I love seeing and interacting with the kids. Thank you for helping make that possible. We will still have our meeting on Tuesday at 9:30. However, our Thursday meeting will be changed to 6:00 pm. I am changing it this week because I know there are many who have a hard time getting on earlier because of things like work and whatnot. I want to try it in the evening and see if we can get more wonderful faces on. Thank you for your flexibility with this. This past week we talked about flowers and pollination. This week we will be talking about vertebrates and invertebrates. If possible, I would like students to pick a living thing that is an animal and share with us if it is a vertebrate or invertebrate and 3 facts about it. For example, if a student chooses a lobster, they could share that it is an invertebrate, they are part of the crustacean family, they eat live food such as fish, and they never stop growing until they die. They can share this on Tuesday or Thursday and they can also share twice if they would like.

Just a reminder that Heggerty videos are on the lower el blog. Here is the link for the videos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqKLeUeLT5s4n9cJemOGDlQ You will need to register to Ms. Mikaela’s Youtube to see them all. Ms. Tiffany and I did them again for this coming week, so get on and your child can do Heggerty with us. They are short videos, between 5 and 10 minutes long. I highly encourage you to have your child do them.

My husband’s knee recovery is coming along. He is able to move around a lot more and in a lot less pain. The swelling is going down as well. I am doing well, also. I think my little one is trying to grow faster than my stomach though. He is a wiggler and gets hiccups a lot. I like feeling his movements though, unless I am trying to sleep. I feel well, other then lower back pain on occasion and heartburn. These are minor things though and I will live. I have 7 weeks left, and really want to make it to my due date, June 12. I am in no rush to get him here, but excited for it to come.

As always, thank you and please let me know if there is anything I can do for you and your families.

Take care.

Jalee

With Love

My son’s preschool teacher shared this with me. I wanted to share it with all of you. Education and learning are super important, but so is our children’s emotions well being. Just some food for thought.

“Dear Parents,

Don’t stress about schoolwork. In August, I will get your children back on track. I am a teacher and that is my superpower. What I can’t fix is social-emotional trauma that prevents the brain from learning. So right now, I just need you to share your calm, share your strength, and share your laughter with your children. No kids are ahead. No kids are behind. Your children are exactly where they need to be.

With love,

All the teachers on the planet Earth”

Half Way Through April

Hello Everyone!

Can you believe we are half way through April? Time has gone by so fast, but I also feel like it has crawled. Sometimes it feels like it has been a year since we entered into our soft closure.

You should have all gotten an email from the school with our new lower el letter updates. I also included it in a post previous to this one.

As you all know, schools in Utah will remain in soft closure through the end of the school year. We will have more works, digital and hard copy, come the beginning of May. We will also have information about things such as our bridging ceremonies and other end of year traditions by this time as well. Please watch for an email from me on Monday with a link to a very short survey about the hard copy and digital works we have been giving you. As a lower el team we would like to use this survey to better meet the needs of our MMA families in lower el.

I hope you are all doing well and your families are healthy and happy. It has been a cold week this week, but it is gratefully supposed to start getting warmer. Thank goodness. I miss going out on walks with my kids and just sitting in the backyard with them in the sunshine. It has been nice having my husband home with us this past month, but would be much better if he were able to be mobile and join us on our walks. His knee surgery went well and he will be able and ready to help when the baby comes. However, he has been in a lot of pain but it is getting better day by day.

Just a reminder that since we are at the end of two weeks, it is time to turn in workcharts. Hard copies were provided in the packets or there is a digital form on the lower el blog. You can either turn in the hard copy at the school Monday, send me a picture of the workchart, or send me an email with the work your child is doing, such as Imagine Learning daily, handwriting twice a week, math worksheets daily. This is not meant to be stressful for you or me. Just a way for us both to track what your child is doing at home. Please don’t stress about the number of works being completed. I am grateful for you and all you are doing to help your child with their works and education. I know it can be difficult and I appreciate all your time and effort.

Tiffany and I are still loving our Zoom meetings. I am incorporating some grace and courtesy lessons into the meetings and will start doing some short cultural lessons this week as well. Thank you for helping your children get on the meetings so we can see them and they can see us and each other.

Lastly, I wanted to share with you that today the staff at MMA were able to have a Zoom meeting with our new director Micah. I cannot express to you in words are excited and at peace I am with the opportunity we get to have Micah join our MMA family. I know that he will add an amazing spirit and guidance to our community. He truly has a growth mindset spirit and amazing ideas to help all faculty, parents, and students. What a wonderful man to have as our director. I am excited for you all to get to meet him and know him better. I also look forward to getting to know him better.

Stay healthy and safe!

Jalee

Update Lower El Letter

April 17, 2020

Dear Wonderful MMA Lower El Families,

As always, we hope this letter finds you and your families healthy, happy, and well. As teachers, we have been thinking about you all, especially your children and how we can best help you as we continue to move forward with distance learning.

As a reminder, our lower el blog is still up and running. This is where you can find all the links for any digital components we are using and it is being updated as needed. One new thing we will be adding soon is a page with links for virtual field trips. Since we are all doing our best to practice the stay home and stay safe initiative, we are unable to visit educational places like we normally would on field trips. This page will allow you and your child to virtually explore not only places we could easily attend in person but places that are far away like the San Diego Zoo. Your teacher may also plan a virtual field trip to do as a class. If needed, the link for the blog is http://blogs.mariamontessoriacademy.org/lowerel/.

Moving into the last two weeks of April, we will continue using hard copy packets and the online resources from the blog to help students in their continual progress for learning. At the beginning of April, all lower elementary teachers made packets that had enough material to last through the month for all parents who requested hard copies. If you have already made it to the school to pick up the packet, you have the materials you need for the next two weeks. If you have not picked it up but you requested one, you can pick it up during the next two weeks, Monday to Friday from 9-11 am or 3-5 pm.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with the works and aren’t sure what to do, please refer to the workcharts that were included in the packet and also posted on the blog. These give you suggestions for how many times a week to do certain works and how long to do each one. As a team we wanted to provide you with this to help with some guidance but also still allow students to have a choice like they do at school.

The workcharts are also how we will be tracking work that your child is doing. There are two ways you can turn this in, either dropping it off at the school in your teacher’s bin or by taking a picture and sending it to your teacher. If neither of these options works for you, please send your teacher an email with the works your child has been doing. For example, “John has been doing Imagine Learning Math and Language daily and a page of handwriting 3 times a week.” We ask that you do this every two weeks. We are currently at the end of our second week, so please turn in a workchart or email your teacher as soon as you are able.

As many of you know, we will be in a soft closure through the remainder of the school year. This means we will continue with our distance learning through the last day of school. In order for us as teachers to best meet your student’s learning needs, we have created a survey that will be shared with you by your child’s teacher no later than this coming Monday. It is a short survey that will take only a few minutes and give us data to help us moving forward. Please complete this survey by this coming Wednesday end of day.

As teachers we will be updating our blogs weekly, contacting you via phone call, email, or Remind bi-weekly, and doing a class meeting (most likely through Zoom) weekly. This way we hope to support you and your child individually in the best way possible.

We will have a solid plan on what the final three weeks of school will look like regarding works and end of year traditions like bridging by the first part of May.

Thank you all for your hard work in helping your children continue their learning and educational growth during this time of social distancing. We miss your children greatly and hope to see them all during one of the class meetings we will be having. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email your child’s teacher.

Stay healthy, happy, and safe.

Take care,
Lower Elementary Team

Zoom Meetings

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend, celebrating the holiday or just spending time with your families.
Here are the invites for the Zoom meetings. I have included the Tuesday and Thursday ones. You will probably notice that the meetings show they are going to the end of May. This was the default of the website and I didn’t notice until I had saved the meetings and then it wouldn’t let me change that part. As you know, we are for sure closed until May 1. Considering many things are changing daily, we will have to wait to see what happens as it gets closer. We may need those extra meeting times. I guess we will see. If your child wants to attend both meeting, that is wonderful, if they only attend one, that is also wonderful. I also understand that sometimes neither meeting times work, and that is okay too. Ms. Tiffany and I just love seeing and talking to the kids, so any time they can get on is perfect.

I have added some phone conference times to Track it Forward. If you would like me to give you a call sometime this week in regards to how things are going or questions you might have or if you child just wants to say hello, please sign up. If the times I have do not work for you, please email me and we can figure out another time. With my husband’s knee surgery today and daily morning meetings, I don’t have any morning sign ups for this week but can add some next week depending on how things are going. If you would rather not do a phone call, I will send you an email by Friday to see how things are.

Thank you for being amazing!

Wonderful Week

Hello Everyone,

I cannot tell you how much Ms. Tiffany and I LOVED seeing all the kids that were able to join the Zoom meetings. We have missed them all so much! It was so much fun to be able to talk to them and ask them questions. Mainly of them had a great time sharing works they have done or even showing us all their pets. It was way fun for us and we can’t wait to do it again. The plan is to just do the same times we did before. I think I can send you one invite for both times and you can keep using the same link. I will play around with it and see. We will do the meetings again at 9:30 am Tuesday and 4:00 pm Thursday. You can email me any feedback you have about the meetings we already had.

I want to apologize for not getting you all emailed individually this past week. My goal was to contact you all about how things are going with works and whatnot. I did not get that don’t this past week, so I am sorry. I would like to create a sign up for anyone who would like to talk to me on the phone instead of email. However, my husband is getting reconstructive surgery on his knee for a torn ACL Monday, so I am not sure what my schedule for next week will look like. Once I get that all figured out, I will create a sign up. That way, if you would prefer to talk on the phone instead of email, we can do that. Otherwise, I will just shoot you an email during the week to check with you. As always, you can email or send me a message on remind whenever. I am checking me email constantly throughout the day between 8-4. Since this is still new to all of us, any feedback or thoughts are great.

We have had a wonderful week for weather this past week. I hope you are all able to get out and exercise or play or just hang out in the sun with your family. I know we are super enjoying the great weather and looking forward to more. I also hope that this message finds you and your family healthy and well. While we greatly miss all the kids, we understand the importance of social distancing for all our safety and well being.

I do want to share with you how excited we all are for Mr. Micah to be our new director. The more I learn about him and his family, the more I feel he will be such a great asset to our MMA family. He has great experience in education in many areas, and seems to be a true Montessorian at heart, someone who will help make our school better and continue with the amazing work that our past administrators have started for us. We will greatly miss Mr. Mike, but welcome Mr. Micah with much excitement. Hopefully the craziness of all that is going on will not hinder Mr. Micah and his family from coming from Hawaii in July.

Lastly, but most importantly, Ms. Tiffany and I want to thank you all for the hard work you are doing with your children. I wish so much we could be at school with them, but know they are being taken care of at home with you. I am experiencing how hard it is to teach my own child at my house, and want to thank you for teaching all your children. Please let me know if there is any way I can be more supportive of you in your efforts at home.

Stay safe. Stay well.

Jalee
