Hello Families!!

We have a busy busy week before us! But first…..

Just A Reminder:

Hoodies

We continued to have an issue with hoodies. Per our dress code, it states, “Outerwear: Outerwear is defined as anything worn over the standardized dress, such as, but not limited to: hoodies, jackets, and coats. Students shall not be allowed to wear any type of hood/hoodie inside the school building. Nothing offensive on outerwear is allowed, such as images, sayings, artwork, music groups, etc.” Please enforce this with your student as this is against our school’s dress code and your student will be written up.

Smart Watches

In our day and age, smart phones and smart watches are in and are often a necessity. We want to assure you that all classrooms are equipped with phones; therefore, students should not have their phones or smart watches on during the school day. It’s official ! I, Ms. April will be the New lead teacher! I am so excited to take this role and have many exciting plans for the future of these amazing kids! Education is a lifelong process. It’s a journey and an adventure!

Let me share a little about myself so you know who you have in trusted your peeps to. I graduated from Weber State University with a BS degree. I have homeschooled for the past 14 years and taught in a local common wealth school classes in the U.S. Constitution, Shakespeare, Pyramid Project – finding truth through science and mathematics, and various sciences. Before that I headed up children classes for boys, “The Knights of Freedom”, and girls, “Liberty girls”.

When I am not in the classroom, I love learning from nature! I love hiking, backpacking, and biking. I love to learn about different cultures and have traveled a bit. I love art and music and dabble in both. My home is an ongoing art project!

This new adventure may have a few bumps in the beginning …middle….etc. But doesn’t every good adventure worth telling?! Thank you for joining me in this epic one!

I want to set clear expectations for the children that you as parents can help with  at home. We have work cycles that give the children plenty of time to complete a number of works. If you have not signed up for PT conferences, please do so or make arrangements with me.

Recap:

Last week was rough with Ms. Taylor in and out with flu, but we started our fun run campaign last week and it has been so fun! Make sure you are updating your pledge information online at www.funrun.com so we can keep track of everything. If you have any questions please get in touch with us. We are so excited to be hosting our very first fun run! We also passed out information and word lists from the school spelling bee last week as well. Specific dates for the spelling bee are at the end of this blog under: upcoming.

This week:

We have some big changes happening in our class this week that we want everyone to be aware of! We have a permanent teacher starting with us on Wednesday! Ms. April has decided to step up and take the position as lead teacher. This is such exciting news and we are so happy to be able to share it with you. With this happening, my last day (Ms. Taylor) will be Tuesday. Never fear I am a regular sub at the school and I’m sure I will run into you guys in the halls!  Ms. April and I have already begun transitioning her as the lead teacher so this will be a smooth and natural transition for the students.  With that in mind be sure to check in with your child and maybe even have a conversation with them so we are all on the same page. We will be working with the students the beginning of this week as well to help them along.

Parent teacher conferences are coming up pretty quick and we can’t wait to meet with all of you and show you what we’ve been up to! To sign up for a conference please follow the link to our track it forward page and sign up for a date!

January 14th-18th: Hooray for STEM Week!!!

Hello families!

We wanted to thank Henry’s mom Gloria for coming in to help out with work cycle Monday and bringing snack last week! We always appreciate your hep and support.
If you would like to sign up to bring snack please sing up on track it forward or let Ms. Taylor or Ms. April know so we can make note of it. Please keep in mind when it comes to snack we have to consider classroom allergies and we ask that no peanut-butter, nuts, or egg products come in! We always appreciate fresh fruit, crackers of any kind and pretzels seem to be a big hit.
Recap:
To recap last week we had some really amazing science lessons with Ms. April about seeds and plant parts. We planted our own pea seeds in class and taped them to the window in zip top bags so we can watch them grow and develop. Feel free to come by and take a look, you can see them from the front of the school or come by the room and check it out! We had some great math lessons with the stamp game and have been working on a lot of review lately since we are still coming off of winter vacation brain. We watched a clip on the laws of motion, had a student presentation on it, and wrote about it for our weekly writing prompt. It was a busy week.
Homework:
Some of you may have noticed that homework got sent home last week. The students are given several hours a day to practice the skills we learn in lessons and have daily expectations of work that is due in the morning and in the afternoon. I start the day by explaining what I need from them during the work cycle we are about to start, then I write it on the board and write what time it’s due (usually 11:15am or 2:15pm). April and I will circulate the room and check on works, as well as remind students of the work they need to complete and redirect students that are off task. To be perfectly transparent, I expect a math work, a language work, their spelling work for the day and if we have a writing prompt I do want them to work on that. If they finish, there are several other things listed on the board for them to work on. If they don’t finish I have begun sending home notices of works that are not completed for them to finish at home. It is not my intention to take up their afternoon with homework, and I always hate to send it, but April and I are in the process of teaching some accountability to our students about managing their time wisely. We appreciate your help and support as we learn together through this process. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact April or myself.
STEM Week:
STEM Week starts this week and we are so excited to be taking part in seeing all the projects throughout the school, going to fun and informative assemblies and have a real hands on experience and celebration of science! We have grade level planetarium assemblies going on at the school as well as chemistry lessons and Scales and Tales visiting Friday! All projects are due Friday, feel free to bring them in as you are finishing them and I can store them in my office.
Imagine Learning:
We have papers that are going to be coming home with your child’s imagine learning passwords and login information on it. The school wide expectation is that all students complete 45 minutes a week on these programs. We are working with them Tuesday mornings in class, but if students are able to work on it at home this would help out immensely! Please keep an eye out for this information! Hopefully it will be in their backpacks this week.

January 7-11

Jan 3rd & 4th

Happy New Year friends!

We hope your winter vacation and holiday was restful! This is just a reminder that we will come back to school Thursday January 3rd. Since this is a shortened week (two days) we will not resume spelling words again until next week, Jan 7-11. Please be on the lookout for the words in next week’s blog.

April and I want to say thank you to everyone for the lovely send off before winter break, we had all kinds of lovely things, treats, handmade cards from everyone before we went to break. We very much appreciate the show of love and support from you guys!

Another huge thanks to the families that volunteered, donated or helped out in some other way for the class party before break. It was a huge success and the kids had such a great time. Thank you again for being a part of this with us!

As we move into the new year, here are some things to be aware of.

I (Ms. Taylor) am continuing on with the class through the next few weeks, as soon as that changes I will let you know so that we can move the students into the final transition with their new permanent teacher together.

Aside from Ms. Rosie’s amazing job helping us deep clean the kitchen, we deep cleaned the room on Friday and will continue to do so every Friday at the end of the day. During winter vacation the carpets were cleaned and the floors were waxed so our room will be the cleanest it’s been since school started! I don’t know about you guys but I’m excited to go back to a clean space! Yay!

I wanted to mention, for those of you that are not aware, we have a severe nut allergy in our classroom and are trying to encourage our students to wash their hands before coming into the room. Please help us by having children wash hands at home after they pack lunches. Unfortunately even having contact with a surface that another student has touched could be hazardous for our allergic student. We thank you for your help with this matter. We will be checking everyone every morning when they arrive to help keep everyone in the room safe. Side bar, this should also help cut back on the spread of germs!

All water bottles and lunch boxes went home Friday as well, we are trying to keep those going home for regular washing/sanitizing. Please make sure to check your child’s backpack and wash these bottles before they are returned to school. Thanks!

The deadline for the home projects is creeping up! Friday January 18th all student projects will be due for our S.T.E.M. fair. More information can be found in the first blog post titled ‘Home Projects.’ If you need more information please let me know. I am trying to get something ready to send home with information on it as well. Please do not bring projects in until the week of Jan 14-18.

We look forward to seeing all the students later this week as we start 2019! Have a safe and Happy New Year everyone! See you soon!
