Routine Change for Snack

Our classroom snack policy has changed.  In the spirit of following Dr. Montessori’s recommendations for child nutrition, and in order to align with school policy for snack, our classroom will be participating in child/family provided snack.   This routine will allow children the opportunity to practice practical life skills of preparing snack and cleaning up afterward.  Students will provide and prepare snack 4 days out of the week for 26 students.  Please adhere to the approved items as it will streamline snack time and eliminate possibility of messy spills and stains in our classroom.

In order to ensure that snack does not become a distraction, our class is limiting the approved items to the following list:

  • Mini bagels with cream cheese
  • Fruit (ex. apples, clementines, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, cucumber, melon – cut at home, grapes, cherry tomatoes)
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Veggies (ex. carrots, broccoli, celery)
  • Crackers with cheese (pre-cut)
  • Granola Bars (no chocolate chips please)
  • Fruit Leather (no fruit snacks or fruit roll-ups please)
  • Mini-muffins
  • Whole Grain bread with jam

A Few Important Items I Overlooked at Back to School Night

I’m so excited for this first week of school!  In my excitement, I forgot several very important items.  Please be sure you take note of these so your child can have a successful, healthy experience.

  • Students should bring a water bottle with them to school every day.  If they want to leave it here for the week, we have a place to store them.  Only water should be in water bottles.  No juice, soda, sport drinks.  We are very busy inside and out and regularly drinking water will ward off dehydration and headaches.
  • If your student would like a snack during the morning hours prior to lunch, please send a little something extra in their lunch.  Snack items should be healthy and take no more than 10 minutes to eat.  Suggestions for snack are a small piece of fruit, cheese stick, yogurt, handful of nuts or trail mix (no m&ms please).  This individual snack arrangement worked really well for our class last year so we will be continuing this year in the same manner.
  • Sunscreen and hats.  We are outside more often in the first couple of weeks of school than normal.  Please be sure your child applies sunscreen in the morning before school to avoid sunburn.  Sunscreen wipes are available and can easily be tucked into lunch boxes so your child can reapply before recess.  A sunhat is also an appropriate outdoor clothing item and will protect your kiddo from sun damage.

Classroom Volunteer Opportunity

Good Morning!

I’m looking for one or two people who have basic sewing skills, with an eye for detail.   I would like to make some “place value mats” for our practice with Numbers and Operations in Base Ten (a 4th and 5th level skill).

If you are interested in this project please shoot me an email and I will have the felt available next week.  As always, this type of work counts toward your volunteer hours for the year.

Important Dates and Back to School Reminders

We are now a little over a week away from the start of a new school year and I wanted to send out a few reminders.

  • If you had a child in my class last year, be sure that they have completed their summer homework.  The homework is due the first day of class.  For a reminder of the homework please take a look at the original post.
  • Please be sure your child has prepared their school supplies according to the instructions previously posted.  Having these supplies ready to go will get us off to a great start!  You can revisit the list and the preparation guide here.

Important Dates:

  • Thursday, August 13- Montessori 101 for Parents 6:30-7:00
  • Thursday, August 13- Back to School Night (parents) 7:00-8:00
  • Friday, August 14- Student Orientation, Level 4/ new students 2:00-2:45
  • Monday, August 17- Friday, August 21- First Week of School Early Out 1:00 (Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up at this time)
  • Thursday, September 3- 6:30 pm 6th grade parent meeting regarding student volunteer hours, committees and 6th grade commitments
  • Saturday, September 19- 8:00 MMA 5k, 9:00am Pancake Breakfast (great volunteer opportunities for both parents/ students- if you are interested in volunteering for either of these events please email Teara Galbraith at tearagalbraith@gmail.com

Back to School Night:

Please plan on joining me and Ms. Kari for back to school night on Thursday, August 13 at 7:00pm.  I will be going over my classroom management plan with you as well as answering any questions you might have.  There will be an informative session called Montessori 101 at 6:30 if you are new to our school.  There will be a playground supervisor available to watch your kids so that you can be distraction free during this presentation.

New Student Orientation:

Ms. Kari will meet your children outside of the school on Friday, August 14 at 2:00.  Please drop them off at the curb, following the guidance of our parking lot attendants.  This orientation is for 4th level students and any student new to our school.  Orientation ends at 2:45.
